Superb example of the style. Thick, rich, treacly, viscous, although not sweet. Very, very smooth for a stout at this strength. Everything in perfect balance, walnuts, prunes, alcohol, coffee, chocolate, alcohol - none dominant, nothing overwhelming - just perfect balance.

massive chocolate, especially in the aroma. smells, and tastes, like high quality dark chocolate mixed with a bit of bread. got some nice underlaying esters as well without being dominant. nice mouthfeel and bitterness. would be great with deserts but I have always had it on its own.

500mL bottle. Pours a thick, opaque but clean black with a large, thick and persistent brown head. Aroma is pine, roasted malt, raisins and other dried fruit. Taste includes dark chocolate, coffee and heavily roasted malt. Hop bitterness is very well balanced, and the alcohol is well disguised. Medium carbonation, full bodied and very smooth, leading to a long finish of hop bitterness giving way to the dark malt flavours. The suggested compliment of ice cream or dark chocolate is spot on.

Bottle at Rattle n Hum. Ravishing, luscious. This is beer at its best. Aroma of deeply roasted malts, coffee beans and dark chocolate. Flavor is rich and profound, with heavy burnt malt character, mild bitter chocolate accents, and some dark fruit sweetness. Full-bodied and with medium carbonation, this beer is a bit chewy and a joy to drink slowly. Wonderful.

500mL btl. Delightful coffee aroma, looks great in the glass - black with lovely choc-milk head! Quite fizzy, subtle choc. sweetness with a long coffee/bitter finish. As it warms the chocolate flavours become more pronounced. Extremely enjoyable!

Bottle. Pours jet black with a cascading, luxurious milk chocolate colored head. Aroma is cooked fruits and lots of roast and coffee. Flavor is very bitter coffee, roast, and just a touch salty. Thick and silky on the palate.

A: This really is a beautiful beer. It pours black as night with a nice puffy espresso colored three finger head which settles down nicely to a nice pillow atop the beer. There is a good deal of bubbles rising too the top, and some lacing is left behind as it’s consumed. S: Not real powerful but there is the smell of chocolate, coffee, and caramel in this malty masterpiece. T: It starts out nice and malty with a strong taste of very dark chocolate. It finishes pretty bitter with the taste of dark roasted coffee, charcoal, and a hint of citrus showing thru. Wow this beer is hopped rather nicely for a stout (75 IBU). As it trails off down the throat there is a big puff of smokiness left behind with a sting of booze. M: This is a thick full bodied beer. It has a nice smokiness and bitterness in the finish that seems to last which is really nice.

(bottle - 500 ml) Dark black pour with a creamy tan head. Aroma is roasted malts and very mild chocolate. Flavor is the same. Incredibly roasted at the start with a subtle chocolate middle, moving to a roasted and coffee-like finish. Smooth and creamy and hides the alcohol well, even though it warms up at the end. Really rich.
