Commercial Description:
This Christmas product is indeed a result of Norwegian legislation. Beers above 4,75% alc./vol. has to be sold through the “Vinmonopolet” which is a government owned chain of outlets selling alcoholic beverages. 98 % of all beer is sold in grocery stores and supermarkets, and as such 98% of all beer sold is below 4,75% abv. The traditional Norwegian Christmas Beer is strong, but because people do not shop their beers in Vinmonopolet, they do not sell well. To be able to reach out to the masses with a Christmas beer, we have brewed Julesnadder to be a light but nutty and malty ale to go well with those rich, greasy Norwegian Christmas dishes. Recommended serving temperature 8°C/45°F.

Ingredients: Maris Otter-, Munich, caramel, black, amber, and chocolate malt; Chinook, Columbus, and Cascade hops; English ale yeast, and our local Grimstad water.

11P 25 IBU 4,5% ABV.

Bottle conditioned bottle from Capone’s. Deep blackish pour with 1-finger tan head. The aroma is rich roasty dark malt, chocoff, molasses. Tastes roasty, with rich chocolate malt, dark chocolate notes, and some mild finishing hops. Medium palate, that got a tad watery at the end.

50cl bottle from Centra. The bottle had no batch, best before or brew-date. It poured a black colour with medium carbonation and a light-brown head that settles down fast in the glass. It has a spicy aroma that also smells heavily of coffee and dark caramel. The flavour is slighlt bitter and tastes of coffee, roasted malt, dark chocolate. It has a lingering aftertaste.

Bottle: Dark amber Colour, with a creamy white foam. Aroma of cofee, and dark chocolate, nice bitter finish. Reminds me, more of a bitter stout, than a Chrimas beer. I like it!

Original rating Christmas 2003: (500 ml bottle). The Nøgne Ø micro brewery is in a class of its own (at least by Norwegian standards), so this beer is by far the best Norwegian "klasse D" (= grocery store market) Christmas/Yule beer you can get (all others are Vienna lagers). Deep copper colour, moderate head. Malty, oaky and toffee aroma with hints of spices. Malty flavour balanced by a decent bitterness. Rerate Christmas 2004: Colour seems even darker this year, plenty of yeast floaties. Flavour is maybe a tad spicier, well balanced hops. Impressively tasty for a Yule beer with a meagre ABV of 4.5%. Rerate 2005: Very dark colour this year, deep reddish brown, hazy, nearly black. Lovely roasty aroma with notes of coffee, oak and caramel. Distinctly roasty flavour with notes of coffee, burnt toast and English liquorice. Brewed with Chinook, Cascade and Columbus hops, 25 IBU, 11 degr. Plato.
