19641948 (492), Greensboro, North Carolina, USA Nov 5, 2007 Pours a deep shadowy black with a thin head of mocha. Laces intermittently. Aromas of licorice, plums, chocolate, and vanilla bean. Warming flavors of deep plum, licorice, dark wheat toast, roasty malts. Rich flavors. Heavily roasted malts. Lactose with anise. Creamy mouthfeel. Lingering aftertaste. Subtle smoke to me. I loved this beer. slimchill (773), Austin, Texas, USA Nov 5, 2007 Bottle. Sweet nose, touch of acidity. Smoke, chocolate, and light fruit. Deep opaque black with ruby tint and minimal brown head. Opens with mild acidity folding into lots of coffee. Smooth with a slightly dry finish. A touch thin, but good flavor. pintsize (1042), Austin, Texas, USA Nov 4, 2007 Updated: Jun 11, 200810-28-07 bottle. Black color with very creamy head. Nice lacing. Roasted smell - which I want more of. Perfect creaminess on the palate. Has actual depth in the flavor. Great balance! ElGaucho56 (386), USA Nov 4, 2007 Bottle. Pours obsidian black with rather large cocoa foamy head. A considerable amount of yeast seems left in the bottle. Nose is raisiny, mildly like pepto bismol, smoky, perhaps some port. Velvety on the palate, not too thick, some coffee and chocolate tones but mostly dark fruits, leading to a salty, tangy finish that is well bittered with British style hops. Quite a nice beer. Guerde (693), Welcome, Minnesota, USA Oct 31, 2007 (bottle) Pours dark with a tan head. The aroma has a lot of burnt malt, some coffee and roasted barley. The flavor is somewhat dry with dark chocolate and cocoa, with a lingering roasted finish. My only knock on this beer is that it is kinda thin. dogfishho (172), Bloomfield, New Jersey, USA Oct 30, 2007 Pours a thick, dark color that alows very little light through it. The aroma is of roasty malts, raisins, cocoa, and plums. The flavor is of bitter chocolate with some coffee astringency, light hop bitterness, and some mild vanilla notes. Complex, but ruined by a thin, watery body. This beer could be so much more than it is, but the thin feeling on the palate totally kills it. lb4lb (2011), Austin, Texas, USA Oct 29, 2007 Updated: Aug 3, 2008Pours a rich, black color with a nice tan head. Smell is dry, roasty malt with some light dusty hops, and some chocolate comes through as it sits a bit. Taste is exceptional. Smooth, creamy mouthfeel and a somehow dry, cocoa flavor balanced perfectly with bittersweet dark roast. Finishes so smoothly and cleanly, leaving a hint of a pleasant aftertaste. Carbonation is spot on, and makes for a silky, creamy beer. Very, very drinkable. One of my favorite porters for sure. Eructoblaster (1477), Gatineau, Quebec, Canada Oct 28, 2007 Bottle - 500ml. Opaque black body topped with a lasting beige foamy/creamy head. Lovely malty aroma with roasty, coffeeish, and cocoa hints. Some subtle smokiness is also detectable. Taste is complex, robust, and very well balanced. It ends with a long and warming bitter/roasty finish. Excellent Porter.
