tarheels86 (704), Washington DC, USA Feb 15, 2009 500 mL. Pours almost pitch black with a very thin, tan head. Leaves fairly good lacing. Aroma of raisins, dark chocolate, raw cocoa, molasses, spiced rum. Taste is creamy with rum raisin, dark chocolate, coffee with a harsh bite of warming alcohol and roasted nuts. 7% is not totally hidden. Ends a little dry and watery but this is a porter not a stout. Very powerful and enjoyable. roder60 (1019), Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, USA Feb 15, 2009 First beer poured into my new Pittsburgh Steelers Super Bowl Champions mug. Pours a nice jet black color with a huge amount of froathy bubbly lighter brown head. Reminds me of an irish coffee in appearance. Aroma is actually rather weak: dark baking chocolate and molases. Flavor is very light in general, molases and a bit of dry sweet chocolate. Overall, not as good as I’d hoped but not bad by any means. probstk (1007), Nepean, Ontario, Canada Feb 11, 2009 0.5 l bottle from Bieropholie, served at cellar temperature in a tulip glass. GUSHED!
App.: Deep brown black with a large, somewhat rocky light mocha head.
Aroma: Lots of tangy black coffee, dark chocolate and molasses, vinous, slightly woody, very dark dried fruits, some sour cherries, black licorice.
Palate: Medium+ body, fairly lively effervescence.
Flav.: Just like the nose – tangy black coffee and dark chocolate, a touch metallic, fruity and vinous, definite black licorice, thick and oily tasting; dry with slight tang and good bitterness with leftover roasted malts.
Pretty big for a Porter! lakersfan16 (53), Anchorage, Alaska, USA Feb 9, 2009 Pours a dark black with a large and bubbly dark brown head. Aroma is sweet and has hints of coffee, dark malts, and chocolate. The flavor is slightly sweet, with brown sugar, molasses, dark fruits, dark malts, and coffee. The coffee gets stronger on the finish. Very smooth beer. BeerBiker (1384), Odense, Denmark Feb 8, 2009 [Sampled with the trio: Svoger, Svogergylp and Adenila Foged at EBF, 2008.] Although it is long time I’ve tasted this I remember some great smoothness all over. Good coffeechocs, sweetness and roasted malt. very pleasant and the best word describing this brew is: Soft! ruggedman (613), Portland, Maine, USA Feb 8, 2009 Bottle at Novare.
Pours supremely dark brown not much light getting through this guy! Aroma is super sweet, chocolate, coffee, and molasses. Flavor is very nice upfront tastes like brown sugar and molasses, as it recedes it becomes a little more complex with a more bitter flavor of coffee and chocolate. Super smooth mouthfeel. This one is a very robust porter, reminds me of baltic porters i’ve had...dare i say it almost could have an imperial in its name and i wouldn’t bat an eye. mikalooch (158), , New Jersey, USA Feb 3, 2009 Bottle. Pours pitch black with a big beige head, thick lacing. Aroma is bar mocha and espresso. Dark chocolate and malt with coffee and hops. Creamy mouthfeel, smooth going down, alcohol barely noticeable. Very nice, well balanced and enjoyable. Capa (955), Yokosuka, Japan Jan 26, 2009 Can’t see through this beer, or it’s beige head. Light roasted malts, some chocolate, berries, nuts, and molasses. Very nice. Thick, creamy, and silky smooth. Chocolate, toasted malts, faint dark fruits, some berries, molasses, and nutty. Finishes with little dryness and some bittersweet chocolate. This is one smooth, tasty, damn fine porter. Heavy, but not like many "stouts" that masquerade as porters. I should have bought three more... (Rating #800)
