Aroma begins with light coffee notes, followed by dark roasted malts, dark chocolate and some perfumey hops. Flavor starts off bitter/sweet, with the roasted malts at the forefront. The coffee is not as strong as it was in the aroma. Dark chocolate and almonds also come through. Strange, astringent finish, combined with the bitterness left my palate feeling beat up. The more I drank this beer the less I liked it. JaBier (1219), Capital City, Ohio, USA

Pours opaque dark brown with a small tan head. Malty aroma with some roastiness and chocolate. Smoky and roasty flavor, but not a whole lot else going on. durhambeer (1214), Durham, USA
| 4.1 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 17/20 | Oct 27, 2008 Holy cow, this is tasty. Bottle; deep black pour with smallish and diminishing off-white head. Bitter chocolate, sweet coffee, dried cherries and other dried fruits. A touch of creaminess, but none of that sour porter thing. Minor notes of peat and smoke. Tons of roasty malt and a noticeable hop presence. This is a huge beer, but quite drinkable. Fantastic. Zinister (1201), Houston, Texas, USA

| 4.5 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 9/10 | 5/5 | 8/10 | 5/5 | 18/20 | Apr 7, 2008 16.9oz bottle. On point stuff. The aroma is spot on, chocolate and roasted malt scents all the way. Deep opaque black color. The malt character just shines with this beer. Super well-balanced and full bodied porter, while remaining completely drinkable. Chewy and big, one of the best porters out there. wilkie (1191), Raleigh, North Carolina, USA

Bittersweet finish from malt. Delicious. OldMrCrow (1191), Seattle, Washington, USA

Pours deep black with a dark-tan head; the aroma is a lovely blendy of sweet light chocolate cake and coffee, some robust fruity (blackberry?) notes along with a definite vinous tinges. After the sweet aroma, the flavor is relatively dry and nicely balanced, hints of smoke, burnt coffee, vinous whispers, a lovely dry finish. Mouthfeel is relatively light despite the 7%, making it lovely to sip without the bursting intensity of some stronger variants. This is quite an impressive porter, and I’m very glad that I got to enjoy the whole thing in sips over the course of an evening, rather than simply trying it at a shared tasting. Bravo!
