Commercial Description:
This sweet stout has been added cold water extract from a Mexican ecological single estate coffee. The result is a discrete coffee aroma that mixes with the slightly burnt licorice aromas from the dark malts combined with spices. The flavor is slightly sweet with an average palate and moderate bitterness and aftertaste.

Deep dark colored with medium sizede beige head. Sweet aroma dominated by chocolate and licorice, fine roastiness and mild alcohol also present, creamy aroma indeed. Medium bodied, soft palate, as good stouts. Flavor starts with strong sweetness and this same chocolate-licorice note, aftertaste has some oystery creamy stout tones with fine roastiness and hops. Good one, though I’m not biggest fan for these sweet stouts.

Darkness has fallen and a crescent moon has risen yet recedes quickly as if a vampire against the dawn. Very focused aromas of strict espresso to the point of chili pepper w/ a touch of sweetness. Its like baked coffee cake. Nice! Medium nectar w/ good carbonation producing a cotton soft texture. Flavors....wow, this is sublime. Refined layers of espresso, mocha, and creamed coffee bean w/ just a mild sweetness factor. The play between the nose and the flavor kills me. The play between airtime and talk time absorb my attention. This is awsome. It goes from espresso essence on the nose to frappacino on the palate in a split second. This beer is not extreme. It’s classic. The segue between aroma and palate is profound. Think back to any other beer that had this dimension and defined contrast. This is a complex beer and worthy of a better score. The price is high and someone might score it lower because of this alone but for the purity of the fine specimen, it’s one of the most complex beers I’ve ever had. Rich yet elegant. Highly recommended.

Courtesy of Quake1028. Pours deep dark darkness but not totally opaque with thin dark tan head. The aroma is mildly roasty to nearly burnt malts followed by a decent amount of dark roasted coffee beans. But I also get an unmistakable jalapeno pepper (as in a bowl of chili) aroma. Odd. The flavor is rich and tasty with a load of coffee balanced by roasty to chocolate malts mixed with sweet maltiness. Nice flavor and better than the aroma was hinting to.

Bottle from tytoanderso. Thanks bro!
Couldn’t wait to try this one so it went from my doorstep to the freezer to our tasting table. Dark brown pour with black edges, almost fully opaque. I can’t see Dave through it, so that’s a blessing. Tan head, a good finger thick and semi lasting, with some decent lacing. Nose of coffee, damn lots of it, chocolate, peppery spice, Dave says jalapenos and that’s pretty accurate, and some more coffee. Smells very unique, especially for this style. The peppery heat disappears completely when you taste it, and a wonderful blend of coffee and chocolate comes out. Did I mention there was coffee in this thing? Medium-full bodied, creamy and filling. Chocolate and coffee grounds fill out the back end and finish, along with a bit of kick from the ABV and some charred malt notes. This is a beast of a sweet stout. Better by a good bit than their Skärgaardsporter, which wasn’t a bad beer to begin with.

Thanks to eclectic for sharing. Pours a thick dark syrupy almost black with a nice dark brown head and some lace. Aroma is nice, and unique- an earthy, almost dirty coffee grounds character with lots of inky black chocolate malt flavor with some anise. Flavor gets more roasty and coffee seesm a bit sharper and fresher rather than old, some nic eink and tar notes but stays smooth and caramelly sweet- almost fudge and tootsie roll like flavor as it warms. Smooth and lasting roasty sweentess in the end. This was real nice.

Viscous, with a pitch black hue in the glass, this beer is just barely opaque when being poured. Plush and creamy, the tall brown head is well lasting. Aromatically, La Granja is opulent without crossing the line to ostentatious territory. A trifecta of coffee, chocolate and caramel is nearly balanced, favouring first the coffee and then the chocolate. Tar and unsulphured molasses hit next, followed by tangy black cherries. There’s also an old, sooty aroma I don’t find particularly pleasant, along with a soda-like citric fizziness which is sort of distracting. I assume the citric contributions are from the relatively bright Mexican coffee beans. Eventually some toffee, perhaps even peanut brittle, comes to life. The flavour plays out as expected from the aroma; unfortunately that includes a dry, sooty quality. Otherwise it’s caramel and milk chocolate evolving into dark chocolate, intensifying into dark roast coffee. The acrid coffee roast flavours would be overpowering at times if not for a sweet, dairy-cream taste as an accompaniment. Lengthy and dry, the aftertaste is good for contemplation. Medium to full bodied with a creamy texture and somewhat prickly carbonation. Slight lemon-lime tingle as the beer warms. Lacks some depth and has a few odd, sharp quirks, but better than average and seems that it could be paired well with the right dessert. 60cl bottle, bottled on 09.02.2008.

Bottle. Pours with a beige head of uneven colours ranging from dark brown to light beige, thick with very small bubbled. The body is as black as it gets. This beer has a fantastic palate, and is very foamy and creamy. The aroma is of coffee, more freshly ground beans than actually brewed coffee. I ground every weekend so I should know :) Also, some sweet milk chocolate is in there. Initially, the taste is sweet, milk coffee and cacao. Later, it turns into more bitter flavours, like ground cocoa beans! The bitterness continues to change a long time after swallowing, and the aftertaste is that of very bitter chocolate. An immensily complex beer, perfect in every way. Almost.
