Commercial Description:
With the developing interest in Belgian abbey ales and the monasteries that brew them, it’s time to remind the world that here in the U.S., we have a Monk of our own. Jazz icon Thelonious Monk is the inspiration for North Coast Brewing’s new Belgian-style abbey ale called, appropriately enough, Brother Thelonious. The beer is being released in conjunction with the Thelonious Monk Institute of Jazz (www.monkinstitute.org), and the brewery will make a contribution to the Institute for every case sold to support jazz education. Like a Belgian “Dark Strong Ale”, the beer is rich and robust with an ABV of 9%. The package is a 750 ml bottle with a traditional cork and wire finish and features a label picturing the jazz master himself.

Flaske: Mørkebrun uklar uigennemsigtig øl. Ikke så pæn. Duft af chokolade og lille karbonering. Behagelig smag af sukker, chokolade og en lille hint af brændt smag. Udmærket øl.

355 ml bottle. Dark, reddish brown body with a nice beige head. Aroma of sweet, overripe fruit, caramel and alcohol. Flavor is sweet malty, dry fruit, brown sugar, a bit vinous and a warming alcoholic finish with balanced bitterness. Sweet, nice and warming.

35.5cl bottle at Olympen. It poured a dark brown colour with a small, almost non-existant head. The aroma is a sweet with notes of sugar, syrup, malts, banana, and plums. The flavour is also sweet with notes of brown sugar, malts and dark fruits. It has a medium long aftertaste. Overall it’s a decent belgian strong ale, but not one of the best.

35,5cl bottle. Thanks to Baggio. Pours deep amber reddish with a creamy lasting head and lacings. Nose is sweet of yeast, berries and red wine. Smooth and full bodied. Taste is sweet with a slight sour and vinous note. Lots of dark dried fruits such as plum, raisin and a little caramel and bubblegum. A vinous and warm sipper. Some syrup and sugar as it warms up. Very nice. Nearly quadruple style.

Tasting at a beerfest [Disclaimer: This was tasted along with many, many other beers during a tasting at Julios. Some of the details are a little hazy]. Fruity goodness.

330 ml bottle. It poured a dark reddish liquid with a medium foam that quickly dissapeared. Smelled of bread and raisin. It tasted of ripe fruit, raisin, bread, red berries, yeast and a hint of red wine.

Bottle. Poured a clear ruddy dark brown color. The head was tan with an orange tint. Smelled of raisin, molasses, toffee, subdued chocolate, and a splash of alcohol. Medium bodied and spicy on the tongue with mild to moderate carbonation. Raisin, fig, spice, and chocolate flavors.

On tap at Blind Lady in Normal Heights, San Diego. Can’t believe it took me this long to try this beer, considering its all over the place in San Diego County. Cloudy dark brown color with a weak head for a tap serving. Sweet, malty aroma with noticeable raisin, plum and candy sugar. Lots of dark fruit in the flavor, with toffee and some apple. Ends a bit cloying, but maintains a decent balance. Medium bodied, with the alcohol showing through. Pretty tasty.
