Commercial Description:
With the developing interest in Belgian abbey ales and the monasteries that brew them, it’s time to remind the world that here in the U.S., we have a Monk of our own. Jazz icon Thelonious Monk is the inspiration for North Coast Brewing’s new Belgian-style abbey ale called, appropriately enough, Brother Thelonious. The beer is being released in conjunction with the Thelonious Monk Institute of Jazz (www.monkinstitute.org), and the brewery will make a contribution to the Institute for every case sold to support jazz education. Like a Belgian “Dark Strong Ale”, the beer is rich and robust with an ABV of 9%. The package is a 750 ml bottle with a traditional cork and wire finish and features a label picturing the jazz master himself.

Nice semi-clear brown color and large tan head that recedes slowly. Nice mixture of many different malt aromas, the same follows in the flavor. A myriad of different malt flavors, some deep sweetness and great complex dark fruits. I’ve never had a Belgian strong quite like this.

Pours a murky dark raisin colour with a small head that fades to a sudsy film, leaving spotty lacing. The nose is rich and sweet with nuances of raisins, cherries, other dark pitted fruit and molasses. The flavour is quite similar with a characteristic Belgian dryness that counteracts its robustness. I get a ton of candy sugar, grassy, earthy hops, raisins, dark fruit and a metallic tang. Before it warms, the carbonation is a bit harsh, but it mellows to a tolerably prickly level. The finish is drying, yeasty and leaves a mild residual fig-like sweetness.

Pours light brown with tan head. Aroma has a bit of soy, dark fruits, cherries. Maybe a touch of sherry. Flavor is malty sweet, A bit of cherry, bordering on cloying, Some brown sugar, raisins, yeast. The sweetness is a almost too much. Mouthfeel is bubbly, nice. Pretty solid, but not blown away.

A thick taste .. slightly malty. A small taste of alcohol. One of my current favorites.

This fine beer pours a rich topaz color with a deep pillowy head. Upon initial scent, the nose was met with a sharp bite of cherry. It has a thick feel and tastes of brown sugar with a slight maltiness. A subtle alcohol taste at the end, but an enjoyable beverage nonetheless.

(750ml bottle) Purchased at Brewery Creek in November 2008.Pours a large frothy, almond-coloured head atop a deep mahogany body. Nose is very boozy, wet wood and cherried-malt. Flavour is of burnt brown sugar, veinous red wine, caramel and mild malts. Good. 7/4/6/3/13

12 0z bottle from the Utah State Wine Store. Pours a ruby hue with a small white head that down to nothing. The aroma is quite nice; sour grapes, light yeast and sweet strawberries. The flavor was also nice; a sourness pervades the drink, not a acidic sourness but a wine like sourness, very nice. Yeast, sweet candies, sweeter fruits, and a light body round it out. A really nice beer and quite a nice surprise.
