Commercial Description:
With the developing interest in Belgian abbey ales and the monasteries that brew them, it’s time to remind the world that here in the U.S., we have a Monk of our own. Jazz icon Thelonious Monk is the inspiration for North Coast Brewing’s new Belgian-style abbey ale called, appropriately enough, Brother Thelonious. The beer is being released in conjunction with the Thelonious Monk Institute of Jazz (www.monkinstitute.org), and the brewery will make a contribution to the Institute for every case sold to support jazz education. Like a Belgian “Dark Strong Ale”, the beer is rich and robust with an ABV of 9%. The package is a 750 ml bottle with a traditional cork and wire finish and features a label picturing the jazz master himself.

(750ml bottle) Purchased at Brewery Creek in November 2008.Pours a large frothy, almond-coloured head atop a deep mahogany body. Nose is very boozy, wet wood and cherried-malt. Flavour is of burnt brown sugar, veinous red wine, caramel and mild malts. Good. 7/4/6/3/13

12 0z bottle from the Utah State Wine Store. Pours a ruby hue with a small white head that down to nothing. The aroma is quite nice; sour grapes, light yeast and sweet strawberries. The flavor was also nice; a sourness pervades the drink, not a acidic sourness but a wine like sourness, very nice. Yeast, sweet candies, sweeter fruits, and a light body round it out. A really nice beer and quite a nice surprise.

12 oz bottle. Interested in this after a friend tried it and said it was decent. Pours a dark reddish color with a small off white head that disappates quickly. Smells of a little bit of hops, a lot of raisins (and other dried fruit), and some caramel malt. Tastes of raisins and caramel, but with very little hop presence. Has a little bit of an alcohol bite (though only 9%), but otherwise quite smooth. Pretty good, but nothing special.

Bottle. Poured blood red/brown with thick off white head. Pleasant aroma of caramel, banana, cloves and malt. Moderate malty flavour with some caramel, candied fruit and malt. Peppery finish with an unpleasant alcohol burn. Still when you find this, drink it.

Thick tannish head that dissipated rather quickly. The color of cola. Aroma of caramel, fruit and alcohol. Taste is sweet and abbey-ish, with alcohol/acid finish. Pretty decent beer.

Initially I found a plum-like fruitiness with round, sweet malts in the nose but this was undercut by a sour cherry-like acidity. Clear ruby brown body is topped by a generous if large-bubbled tan head that recedes rapidly to a partial cover. Flavour offers a nice blend of malt sweetness and fruity esters with a bit of acidity that puckers the cheeks a bit. Medium body is surprisingly light perhaps due to very strong carbonation that is a touch too prickly. Tulip glass. Cellar temperature. Bottle purchased at Bottleworks in Aug-08.
