Commercial Description:
With the developing interest in Belgian abbey ales and the monasteries that brew them, it’s time to remind the world that here in the U.S., we have a Monk of our own. Jazz icon Thelonious Monk is the inspiration for North Coast Brewing’s new Belgian-style abbey ale called, appropriately enough, Brother Thelonious. The beer is being released in conjunction with the Thelonious Monk Institute of Jazz (www.monkinstitute.org), and the brewery will make a contribution to the Institute for every case sold to support jazz education. Like a Belgian “Dark Strong Ale”, the beer is rich and robust with an ABV of 9%. The package is a 750 ml bottle with a traditional cork and wire finish and features a label picturing the jazz master himself.

Bottle at the Bottom Lounge in Chicago. Pours a brownish color with small head. this beer is quite complex. Taste of mixed fruits with a light acidic bitterness. Great beer.

Initially I found a plum-like fruitiness with round, sweet malts in the nose but this was undercut by a sour cherry-like acidity. Clear ruby brown body is topped by a generous if large-bubbled tan head that recedes rapidly to a partial cover. Flavour offers a nice blend of malt sweetness and fruity esters with a bit of acidity that puckers the cheeks a bit. Medium body is surprisingly light perhaps due to very strong carbonation that is a touch too prickly. Tulip glass. Cellar temperature. Bottle purchased at Bottleworks in Aug-08.

There are two things I noticed about Brother Thelo right from the get go. First, the smell: sour acid and spices. This was going to have a very strong taste. Second, the color: beautiful, dark red amber. Wow. The head was small and disappeared in seconds. The taste is powerful: musty oak, raisins, and cloves hidden somewhere in the back. I’m surprised at the alcohol content (9.4%), which you don’t taste or smell at all. But listen, I’m going to get right down to it: this is an interesting beer to pick apart and test the palate, but the flavor just gets too overbearing. The oak gradually turns to a mossy/decomposing leaves taste and smell, and towards the end, it just gets sour. I’ve had Belgians before, but not quite so overwhelming as this, which is definitely not my beer.

Beautiful dark garnet-foxy beer with small, yellow-foxy head. Nicely herbal, parsley, dark sweet malts, and some yeasty spiciness. Sweet-roasted/bitter flavour, coriander, spicy esters, ends like celeri salt. Very thick MF, viscous and sticky, but nicely converging flavours. Pretty sweet/roasted - but in comparison to many US Belgian-style beers, pretty convincing! Thanks to Leen & Dirk for sharing!
