Commercial Description:
With the developing interest in Belgian abbey ales and the monasteries that brew them, it’s time to remind the world that here in the U.S., we have a Monk of our own. Jazz icon Thelonious Monk is the inspiration for North Coast Brewing’s new Belgian-style abbey ale called, appropriately enough, Brother Thelonious. The beer is being released in conjunction with the Thelonious Monk Institute of Jazz (www.monkinstitute.org), and the brewery will make a contribution to the Institute for every case sold to support jazz education. Like a Belgian “Dark Strong Ale”, the beer is rich and robust with an ABV of 9%. The package is a 750 ml bottle with a traditional cork and wire finish and features a label picturing the jazz master himself.

Botella. Unclear deep red-brown colour. Aroma of spices, alcohol and dark malts. Quite good a mouthfeel. Sweet flavour of weel toasted malt with spices, caramel and pleasant bitter hops. Goes great while playing Nothingface.

Bottle: Pours a dark reddish brown with a nice amount of head. The aroma is strong malts, dried fruit, chocolate, and tea. The flavor was very good and well balanced. It had flavors of sugar, malts, raisins, dried peaches, and chocolate. Overall a great great beer from North Coast and one that goes to a good cause. I like to drink for a good cause.

Finally tried this one, and perhaps I should actually pick up a bottle. Any bottle that features Thelonious Monk should be purchased out of principle. Dark clear brown pour with a generous off white head. Malty Belgian sugar, mulled apple spice and other various fall fruits. Good, if a little sweet.

pours a nice brown tan head rich sweet malt character prune dates and other dried fruit flavors aswell as chocolate nice palate good aroma. I lean more toward the hophead pale ales but do enjoy the change of pace a nice belgian dubble or abbey provides and this one does the trick great flavors and aromas warms the soul good stuff. Doesn’t hurt that it supports a cause.

[330 ml bottle from Systembolaget] Nice amber colour, but not so much foam. The flavour is of malt, caramel, spices and jazz.

12 oz. bottle. Pours hazy copper-brown with a pretty, frothy yellow-tan head that fizzes out to a thin cover in short order. Clears nicely upon warming. Aroma is fruity and sweet, with lots of molasses, plum, and wood/bourbon. Flavor is brown sugar/dark fruit sweet with some tangy yeast and a dry finish. Smooth, with moderate prickly carbonation. Medium full bodied and warming, with a slight burn. I wouldn’t put this up with the very best Belgian versions, but it is still quite nice and a good sipper.
