Commercial Description:
With the developing interest in Belgian abbey ales and the monasteries that brew them, it’s time to remind the world that here in the U.S., we have a Monk of our own. Jazz icon Thelonious Monk is the inspiration for North Coast Brewing’s new Belgian-style abbey ale called, appropriately enough, Brother Thelonious. The beer is being released in conjunction with the Thelonious Monk Institute of Jazz (www.monkinstitute.org), and the brewery will make a contribution to the Institute for every case sold to support jazz education. Like a Belgian “Dark Strong Ale”, the beer is rich and robust with an ABV of 9%. The package is a 750 ml bottle with a traditional cork and wire finish and features a label picturing the jazz master himself.

Ruby colour smal creamy beige head. alcohol together with sugar and dark fruits in the nose. flavour is sweet with dark fruits reminds me of Dugges Wallonia but this beer is not as complex as that one although this beer is better value for money.

Pours a dark brown with light tan head, good lacing. Dark fruits and caramel dominate the taste. A good beer for the style and pretty cheap.

750 ml bottle purchased at Spirit’s Burlington. Pours a murky deep chestnut brown with an average size foamy light beige head. Wow what an aroma, is this bourbon barrel aged?? Strong complex with notes of vanilla, raisin, fig, prune, bourbon, toffee, caramel, brown sugar, yeast, just comlex and great all around. Medium bodied yet with a flat mouthfeel almost as if there was not much carbonation despite the head that I observed on the original pour. Flavor isn’t quite as complex as the great aroma but still pleasant. Flavors of dark fruits(figs, plum, raisin), brown bread, yeast, brown sugar and some candy notes(toffee and caramel) come through. This is one solid beer that I would gladly have again and again.

12 oz bottle. Maybe the most interesting looking bottle I’ve seen. Great theory for the beer, and it works. Pours a hazy amber with minimal head. Aroma is earthy and sweet malt. Mouthfeel is thick and chewy, with a bit of alcohol burn to it. Flavors are nutty and earthy. Not as much on the spice as a lot of true Belgians. No sediment, so this one tastes a bit "cleaner" than a lot of the yeasty abbey style ales.

Bottle. Pours with a light brown and very large head, fair lacing, and light brown body. Hints of cereal, citrus, and bananas. Slick and oily texture with lively carbonation. Solid but not great beer.

Bottle from Systembolaget in Sweden. Dark amber body. Aroma is just great! Complex. Has malt, cola, butter, little yeastfeel, berries, plums and spices. Flavor is little winous-like. It´s also spicy and sweet in the same way. Perfect to sip on with some chocolate. Palate is quite big and little bubbly. Medium bitter and medium dry.

Underrated for sure. Pours a gorgeous mahogony color from the bomber with a creamy off-white head and mild carbonation. Smells and tastes of rich cream, alcohol, and hops with notes of vanilla in the flavor. Brilliantly balanced and highly drinkable for a Belgian Strong.

Bottle. Nice red/brown colour. No head. Fruity aroma. Tastes dried fruit(raisin) and a touch of caramel. Too sweet.
