Commercial Description:
With the developing interest in Belgian abbey ales and the monasteries that brew them, it’s time to remind the world that here in the U.S., we have a Monk of our own. Jazz icon Thelonious Monk is the inspiration for North Coast Brewing’s new Belgian-style abbey ale called, appropriately enough, Brother Thelonious. The beer is being released in conjunction with the Thelonious Monk Institute of Jazz (www.monkinstitute.org), and the brewery will make a contribution to the Institute for every case sold to support jazz education. Like a Belgian “Dark Strong Ale”, the beer is rich and robust with an ABV of 9%. The package is a 750 ml bottle with a traditional cork and wire finish and features a label picturing the jazz master himself.

The beer pours a very dark amber almost black with a thick off white head that is mostly lasting. The nose is a yeasty sour funky mix of bread and malts. The flavor is what the nose has lead us to believe; a slightly funky sour with notes of yeast coriander and citrus, the finish is slightly sour and short lived.

12oz bottle. 4-pack purchased in Calgary. Very dark reddish brown with a good yellow tinged head. Keep the liquid swirling in the glass for a steady aroma stream. Alcohol, malt, spices and a hint of molasses. Lively thick mouth feel. I find it tasty, interesting and drinkable. Restrained alcohol. Dark malt and soft spice. A hint of sourness or acid in the finish that is intriguing.

Bottle: beautiful looking beer with a dark red color. Aroma of chocholate, and some yeast. Very thick beer with nice sweetness. The sweetness yeild to a slight hop taste, but this is a good beer. The alcohol is noticeable.

Bottle shared by a generous local. Poured a deep amber-brown color with a thin beige head that faded to a ring. Aroma of sweet brown sugar, bubble gum, some spice, and a hint of yeast. Moderate biting entry with some fruity undertones and a moderately yeast, dry finish. Smooth, moderate dryness. Not bad, but not outstanding and lacks some Belgian character.

Beautiful dark amber color with good sized tannish head poured from 750. Good malt flavor with a hint of sweetness. Nice aftertaste alcohol not to overwhelming.

Brick colored autumn color with a small, well layered hour. Bubble gum and dark fruit in the nose, fairly nice, but could have more depth. Flavor has hints of honey covered fruits, decent belgian character and a decent finish. It’s an ok Belgian style beer, better than most American interpretations.

Pours an amber or somewhat reddish body. Caramel malts and definately sweet tasting. Very little hops. Nice medium sized head, with aromas of syrup. I thought it would be better than it was for the price. But truthfully, I was a little dissapointed.
