Commercial Description:
With the developing interest in Belgian abbey ales and the monasteries that brew them, it’s time to remind the world that here in the U.S., we have a Monk of our own. Jazz icon Thelonious Monk is the inspiration for North Coast Brewing’s new Belgian-style abbey ale called, appropriately enough, Brother Thelonious. The beer is being released in conjunction with the Thelonious Monk Institute of Jazz (www.monkinstitute.org), and the brewery will make a contribution to the Institute for every case sold to support jazz education. Like a Belgian “Dark Strong Ale”, the beer is rich and robust with an ABV of 9%. The package is a 750 ml bottle with a traditional cork and wire finish and features a label picturing the jazz master himself.

5/2/08 notes: on tap at Eli Cannon’s. Deep ruby-amber color with a small white head. Delicious flavor of cherry, banana, malt and sweetness. Well balanced body, solid overall. 3.6

Pours clear alcoholy, clear bronze with no head and no lacing. Rich, dark sugar sweet aroma. Heavy malt and sark sugar flavor. Heavy, thick, light syrupy mouthfeel. Winey, heavy alcohol finish. Not the best for continual enjoyment.

On-tap at the Thirsty Monk, Asheville. Ironic that my least-favorite during a night of Belgian-styles was the non-native-Belgian? Probably not. Appearance: Dr. Pepper. Aroma: STRONG!!! Caramel, dates, raisins Taste: Again, raisins. Apricots, figs, dates, sorghum. Palate: My least favorite aspect of this beer. It’s too thin, and disintegrates too soon. Almost watery for something so strong. Overall: Good, sweet, and strong, but too sweet, too rich. Drink this one in small quantities. Perfect match with a cardamom chocolate, though.

A fairly strong offering from north coast, this beer is dominated by dark fruit flavors. Some maltiness is present. The mouthfeel is excellent. A good but not great beer.

I have found this beer is best when drank while listening to the man himself, Thelonious Sphere Monk. Much like listening to Monk tunes, it leaves you with satisfied palate and puts you in uniquely delightful mood. And anyways what can be better than listening to Thelonious, and drinking good beer. Best when drank ’Round Midnight. -Bye-ya!

This is a nice, full-bodied beer. Good aroma and a nice head. Flavor is that of dark fruits with a hoppy kick.

Okay, I’ll admit it. I bought this because it referenced one of the greatest jazz musicians of all time. The fact that it was a Belgian style ale was only an added bonus. Pours a nice clear dark amber, almost brown with a thin tan head capping the beer off. Leaves a thin lace along the side of the glass as it is drunk. The scent was faint, smelling of moist soil and hops. The taste was profoundly more intense than the scent, tasting of caramel, sugars, and malts. Beautiful mouth-feel, very full and creamy. Well balanced in the mouth and a perfect level of carbonation. This was a solid belgian style abbey ale, one that I am willing to pick up again in the future. Serving type: bottle
