Commercial Description:
With the developing interest in Belgian abbey ales and the monasteries that brew them, it’s time to remind the world that here in the U.S., we have a Monk of our own. Jazz icon Thelonious Monk is the inspiration for North Coast Brewing’s new Belgian-style abbey ale called, appropriately enough, Brother Thelonious. The beer is being released in conjunction with the Thelonious Monk Institute of Jazz (www.monkinstitute.org), and the brewery will make a contribution to the Institute for every case sold to support jazz education. Like a Belgian “Dark Strong Ale”, the beer is rich and robust with an ABV of 9%. The package is a 750 ml bottle with a traditional cork and wire finish and features a label picturing the jazz master himself.

This is a nice brew folks. Nice crystal clear brown color with a decent sized head. Dried fruits on the nose and tongue. Good malt and a bit of hops to balance it well. I like this beer.

Ruby amber with a fruity, yeasty nose. Flavor is abbey ale all the way - dark dried fruits and bready malts with yeasty goodness. Rich and tasty. Very good.

750ml bottle. Part of a blind tasting. Clear brown pour with nice head atop. Seems rated a bit high.. i didn’t find anything to exciting about this. Good but one of the weaker brews of the night.

Opened up the bottle and it was a little bit of a gusher. Pours a ruby color with a decent size head. Aroma of some dark fruit and a little bit of yeast. Nice dark fruit flavor...very good and it seems to have a little bit of oak in there as well. I was actually quite surprised by this beer.

Classis belgian look. Deep amber/mahogany color with a think white head (light lacing). Aroma of fruity dark esters (cherry and plum). Flavor is spot on with the fruit up front and lingering maltiness. A really nice abbey ale. I have stayed away from this for some time, but it is really good.

Bottle. About 1 yr old. Dried fruit and dark roasted malt aroma, some yeast. Reddish brown colors with quickly diminishing off white head. Strong fig, rasin and malt flavors. Oak and woody flavors, some earthiness. Medium palate. Dryish finish and sweet through the middle. Good flavors. Slight metallic bite. Warmingly alcholic.

12oz bottle. Clear reddish nut brown with small beige head. The aroma has some peaches and candied apples, along with a shot of salty soy sauce. The flavor is sweet and syrupy, with a salty nuttiness. The mouthfeel is smooth and slippery. Not doing too much for me, just seems like its on the fence. (3.1) Rerate: 75cl bottle. Much more yeast in the aroma and flavor, no soy, and a nice smooth palate. This one was definitely much better out of a bigger bottle. Balanced and quite drinkable for the strength.
