Commercial Description:
With the developing interest in Belgian abbey ales and the monasteries that brew them, it’s time to remind the world that here in the U.S., we have a Monk of our own. Jazz icon Thelonious Monk is the inspiration for North Coast Brewing’s new Belgian-style abbey ale called, appropriately enough, Brother Thelonious. The beer is being released in conjunction with the Thelonious Monk Institute of Jazz (www.monkinstitute.org), and the brewery will make a contribution to the Institute for every case sold to support jazz education. Like a Belgian “Dark Strong Ale”, the beer is rich and robust with an ABV of 9%. The package is a 750 ml bottle with a traditional cork and wire finish and features a label picturing the jazz master himself.

Classis belgian look. Deep amber/mahogany color with a think white head (light lacing). Aroma of fruity dark esters (cherry and plum). Flavor is spot on with the fruit up front and lingering maltiness. A really nice abbey ale. I have stayed away from this for some time, but it is really good.

Bottle. About 1 yr old. Dried fruit and dark roasted malt aroma, some yeast. Reddish brown colors with quickly diminishing off white head. Strong fig, rasin and malt flavors. Oak and woody flavors, some earthiness. Medium palate. Dryish finish and sweet through the middle. Good flavors. Slight metallic bite. Warmingly alcholic.

12oz bottle. Clear reddish nut brown with small beige head. The aroma has some peaches and candied apples, along with a shot of salty soy sauce. The flavor is sweet and syrupy, with a salty nuttiness. The mouthfeel is smooth and slippery. Not doing too much for me, just seems like its on the fence. (3.1) Rerate: 75cl bottle. Much more yeast in the aroma and flavor, no soy, and a nice smooth palate. This one was definitely much better out of a bigger bottle. Balanced and quite drinkable for the strength.

The flavor really starts to open up after the beer has sat out, opened up and has time to warm and breathe. Pours a deep mahog color with a small tope colored head. Nose is sweet and sugary dark fruits, and a bit of chocolate. Taste is sweet, balanced, chocolately, some caramel and has a decent medium mouthfeel. I did not enjoy this beer until it opened up.

poured a beautiful "mahogany" color w/ an off-white head. smelled spicy. Tasted of vanilla and alcohol. Very sweet. A little watery in the texture. Overall not bad. Once it warms a bit it gets sweeter.

Soft, powdery dark Belgian aroma with noticable vanilla and alcohol. Great bottle, label, deep brown orange beer with a big head that fades rapidly. Woody, slightly herbal and tannic. Cream sherry notes. Leans towards tart and bitter, lightly astringent. Medium body, not too fizzy. Decent.

Raisins on the nose, some clove, with a little molasses. Brown with very noticeable red hues. Medium head with minimal lacing. Seems the alcohol prevails more than the complex flavors in Belgian style ales. Certainly not bad, but better Belgian style ales out there--both American and from Belgium (of course).

Mahogany beer with light brown head. Aroma is of caramel, spice. Has a sharp caramel flavor with some licorice, chocolate and tobacco notes. Finishes appropriately dry. Has some unpleasant phenolic character (styrifoam) too.
