Commercial Description:
With the developing interest in Belgian abbey ales and the monasteries that brew them, it’s time to remind the world that here in the U.S., we have a Monk of our own. Jazz icon Thelonious Monk is the inspiration for North Coast Brewing’s new Belgian-style abbey ale called, appropriately enough, Brother Thelonious. The beer is being released in conjunction with the Thelonious Monk Institute of Jazz (www.monkinstitute.org), and the brewery will make a contribution to the Institute for every case sold to support jazz education. Like a Belgian “Dark Strong Ale”, the beer is rich and robust with an ABV of 9%. The package is a 750 ml bottle with a traditional cork and wire finish and features a label picturing the jazz master himself.

750 ml. Hazy, dark amber-brown with a large and lasting creamy cap that leaves frosty lace everywhere. Spicy-sour dark fruit and toffee nose. Flavor begins with toffee and sourish dark fruit, then has some salty leather, vanilla, oak, bourbon, and dark brown sugar-bubblegum. Nice, big malty flavors are balanced well by some drying hop and alcohol on the finish. Nearly medium body is smooth and finishes slightly dry. Finish is a little tingly and chest-warming, with some well-disguised alcohol.

750 courtesy of Naka shared with Naka and Nate. Pours amber/brown with a creamy, foaming head, one finger. Nose is fruity, apple, raisin and pear. Some caramel notes, but the fruit dominates. Apple, Pear, cherry, raisin, a touch of sour but more dry with some bitter. Pretty decent. Some lacing. Like it.

Shared w/ Nate and Juart. Pours a burnt amber with some red hints. A really thick creamy light tan head. Nose of some apple yeasty sourness and a good wallop of alcohol. Very sweet taste. Some caramel and fruity esters. A little bit of alcohol bitterness in the finish. Decent body. The beer isn’t that complex, but it is good.

Sampled from 750mL courtesy of Naka. Mild funky notes to this one, with caramel and toffee, light butterscotch and diacetyl. Mild fruity character and cherry skin. Light papery hops. Dark brown-amber clear, with a fairly good sized off-white foamy lacing head. Medium watery body with medium carbonation. Starts with a tangy fruitiness, like macerated raisins and plums, caramel and toffee, with a light oaky-acidic tang. Mild funkiness and light fruity hops. Overall, it’s very sweet, and almost a bit cloying in the finish. Funky and woody, and just a bit watery in the end.

I’m glad this is styled as a Belgie strong, because it certainly does not represent any kind of tripel by the furthest imagination. Brownish slightly hazy ale. Has a rather volatile alky olfactory. Strong alky bitter malt flavors. Old time taste does little to hide the alky. Rather crude. Goodly amount of carbonation for a high alky beer. Difficult at times. medicinal finish. Rather raw and coarse.

Brilliant red/brown color with a tan head. Has a musty wood and sweet caramel aroma. Smooth and full bodied. Decent taste is toffee sweet with black pepper and other spices. Has a nice spicy alcohol burn to finish. Worth a try i suppose. 3197

Bottle. Not a big fan of this interpretation. While it did have the requisite bananna and other fruit ester notes, there was an annoying funkiness that I can’t even really describe. Worth a try, but not a second buy.
