Commercial Description:
With the developing interest in Belgian abbey ales and the monasteries that brew them, it’s time to remind the world that here in the U.S., we have a Monk of our own. Jazz icon Thelonious Monk is the inspiration for North Coast Brewing’s new Belgian-style abbey ale called, appropriately enough, Brother Thelonious. The beer is being released in conjunction with the Thelonious Monk Institute of Jazz (www.monkinstitute.org), and the brewery will make a contribution to the Institute for every case sold to support jazz education. Like a Belgian “Dark Strong Ale”, the beer is rich and robust with an ABV of 9%. The package is a 750 ml bottle with a traditional cork and wire finish and features a label picturing the jazz master himself.

750 mL Bottle - A cool label and a great beer. I agree with many reviewers about the beautiful mahogany beer and beige head. A rich caramel malty flavor with a semi sweet subtle spice flavor.

One of the best beers I’ve ever had. Visually, one of the most beautiful beers as well. Pours a deep, clear amber-red, that actually appears to have a sunburst effect as you look at it through the side of a belgian glass. Aroma is sweet and fruity with a wisp of yeast. Taste is earthy and fruit that spreads out on the palate into a bitter/sweet finish on the sides of the tongue. Finish also has notes of yeast and alcohol. In short, a masterpiece by our friends at North Coast!

I have stored this bottle about a year. Pours a red-hued light brown color, with some haze, and a decent head that lasts to the end. Aroma is dark fruits, with some malt and some wood characteristics. Also hints of yeastiness in the nose. Flavor is more dark fruits, some yeastiness and chocolate malt. Hops are apparent, but very subdued. Very well balanced beer in style. Alcohol comes through, but softly. Body is suitably medium to full, with a creamy carbonation. Aftertaste is lingering dark malt and fruit.

I’m thankful this is now available locally. The bottle poured rich mahogany with ruby tones. Open for about two minutes prior, thin tan head settles quickly.Aroma of alcohol and caramelized malts and SWEET yeast. The yeast and grain produce a toasty sweetness which combines with the gentle warmth of alcohol. Medium full mouth feel. Spot on and delcious. Cheers!

A very nice offering from North Coast, with a more than appropriate name. Sample this from its 750ml bottle and was very impressed. It pours dark mahogany, and the smell is very spicy, malty, sweetish, and balanced. Caramel, malt, almonds, dark fruit, and a heavy alcohol presence are all apparent in the taste.

Friday, November 17, 2006 Employee Tasting Notes (Belmont Station)--Hailing from Fort Bragg, CA’s North Coast Brewing, this big beer (9% ABW) was smooth and well-balanced despite being high octane. Bolstered by an outstanding label depicting Thelonius Monk with a halo of piano keys, BT was a tasting favorite with a rich reddish hue and a soft, mildly carbonated, "leathery" mouthfeel. The alcohol was well hidden in this spectacular brew.

Aged this one about 8 months. Pours a hazy, murky brown color with a medium sized, frothy tan head. Nice, intricate lacing noted. The aroma is sweet and malty, with candied sugar, caramel, maple syrup, and dark fruits all showing strong. Copious amounts of vanilla and oak come through as well, as does a faint nuttiness. The flavor follows this same sweet, malty path, though it does have a substantial enough hop profile to add excellent balance and drinkability. The medium-full, silky smooth body is slightly syrupy, but not at all cloying. This is a really nice, ultra-drinkable, big Belgian brew.

A dark brown appearance with a ruby tint. The aroma consists of chocolate, molasses, brown sugar, vanilla, and cherries. The flavor is rather sweet on this one. A lot of milk chocolate flavor but also some caramel, raisins, cherries, and brown sugar. The alcohol is well hidden. Overall this is a very nice beer!
