Slightly cloudy dark brown ale, with a huge tight, bubbles light brown head.
Nice deep roasty, smoky, malty aromas with nice spice showing through..almost reminds me of a Belgian themed Scotch ale.
Very malty ,slightly dry flavours, soke too, then dark fruits, spices, coriander, black pepper, demerara sugar, raw, unrefined.
Thick, full delicious creamy mouthfeel to this beauty. A vertiable meal in a bottle here.
Lovelly beer..I stick to my original view this is like a good Scotch Ale done with belgian yeasts.
Very nice. williamherbert (475), Syracuse, New York, USA

Aroma is a superdark Belgian ale smell. Smoky, dark aroma. Sweet like a dark grape. Doesn’t have the pungent, fizzy smell I expected. Brown sugary rich. Outstanding. Malt is sweet but never ever cloying.
Taste is incredibly dark. Sugary sweet, but balanced with deep roasted malt. Hint of coffee bitterness with brown ale sweetness. Punch of heavy alcohol, which is no surprise since it’s 9%. Even more punchy as it warms. Liqueur aftertaste.
Feels fizzy and thick. Bubbly but subdued by smoothness. Would prefer a bit less bubbly, personally. It’s really strong and very rich. Sweet and yet also roasted, no mean feat. A Belgian Abbey to the core: good example of the style. Cletus (5058), Connecticut, USA

Smells of perfume, spice, dry malt, some floral hints, dark fruit, molasses. Tastes of dry malt, bananas, dark fruit, some sweet molasses, dry spicy finish. arrogantb (715), Denver, Colorado, USA
| 4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 9/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 3/5 | 16/20 | Aug 31, 2009 Brown color with a smattering of bubbles at the surface of the beer. The first thing I smell is like chocolate and makes me think of Old Stock. The taste is fruity, like plums, with an almost barleywine flavor. This seems like Old Stock with Belgian yeast….This is a sipper for sure given the ABV. There is some noticeable phenolic flavor but is is not strong enough to detract from the flavor.

A lot of things going in in the flavor - molasses, raisin, plum, banana, and pepper. Flavors are well blended and hide the 9% ABV well. Good finish. A fine beer. roder60 (1032), Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, USA
| 4.1 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 9/10 | 4/5 | 16/20 | Aug 20, 2009 Tried this at the Pittsburgh Brew at the Zoo and it was the favorite thing I tasted all night. Pours a dark purplish brown color with a nice layer of frothy tan head that stays the entire drink. Aroma is very sweet and sugary, lots of raisins, brown sugar and spice. Flavor is a wonderfuly complex mix of chocolate, caramel, dark fruits, raisins, and a rummy booziness in the finish that makes you want to sip this near a fire. Excellent beer.
