Commercial Description:
With the developing interest in Belgian abbey ales and the monasteries that brew them, it’s time to remind the world that here in the U.S., we have a Monk of our own. Jazz icon Thelonious Monk is the inspiration for North Coast Brewing’s new Belgian-style abbey ale called, appropriately enough, Brother Thelonious. The beer is being released in conjunction with the Thelonious Monk Institute of Jazz (www.monkinstitute.org), and the brewery will make a contribution to the Institute for every case sold to support jazz education. Like a Belgian “Dark Strong Ale”, the beer is rich and robust with an ABV of 9%. The package is a 750 ml bottle with a traditional cork and wire finish and features a label picturing the jazz master himself.

Drank it at the Roxy in Sacramento. Pours dark amber with tan head. Medium bodied, smooth, fruity sweet, nice hoppy finish.

355ml bottle from Systembolaget. Dark brown color with white head. Smells fruits. Thick very sweet taste, some alcohol. Would suite much better those chilly autumn nights than this summer night I enjoyed this one. I like it!

Poured deep ruby red, with a nice off white head. Aroma is of many dark fruits: cherries and figs mostly, with a strong alcohol smell as well. Extremely thick/chewy on the palate, but the taste wasn’t as rich as one would expect. Deep cherry and sugary notes with lots of warming alcohol to bitter it. Solid Belgian ale.

Four pack purchased at Rozi’s in Lakewood. Pour is a nice deep dark ready with a good sized foam head aloft. The aroma is rich with cherries, tart yet soft at the same time since there is a nice musty smell as well. Flavor is quite relaxing, smooth, sweet, fruity. A real pleasing sipping beer. The ending of this has a particularly nice hopping grassy/hay-y cherry finish.

Smells of orange peel, spice, alcohol, somewhat mild for the style. Transparent root beer brown with fading tan head. Less carbonation than expected. Nice syrupy spice with a bit of alcohol and undertones of strawberries and orange. Overall impression improved by the tribute to this great jazz artist. Good, but I won’t be having it again anytime soon with the other available brews of this style.

Tap at Hop Leaf. Poured reddish brown with a full dark off-white head. Aroma consisted of a combination of molasses, caramel and brown sugar. Flavor was sweet with molasses and brown sugar notes. Enjoyable.

750ml - Pours a dark reddish brown in color with a small light tan head that quickly faded to a thin covering over the beer. Minor lacing on the glass. Aroma is fairly strong of Belgian yeasts and sweet malts with dark fruits (prune, dates). Flavor follows pretty closely... a bit sweeter than my taste. A bit of the alcohol in the profile, but not overwhelming. Pretty good...

Aroma of banana, chocolate malt and syrup. Really sweet flavor of fruit cake, chocolate and apricot. I really like it.
