Commercial Description:
With the developing interest in Belgian abbey ales and the monasteries that brew them, it’s time to remind the world that here in the U.S., we have a Monk of our own. Jazz icon Thelonious Monk is the inspiration for North Coast Brewing’s new Belgian-style abbey ale called, appropriately enough, Brother Thelonious. The beer is being released in conjunction with the Thelonious Monk Institute of Jazz (www.monkinstitute.org), and the brewery will make a contribution to the Institute for every case sold to support jazz education. Like a Belgian “Dark Strong Ale”, the beer is rich and robust with an ABV of 9%. The package is a 750 ml bottle with a traditional cork and wire finish and features a label picturing the jazz master himself.

(Bottle) Very sweet. Aroma mostly of bananas and caramel, but remarkably complex. Some unpleasant sourness, in addition to being, in my opinion, too sweet. I have mixed feelings on this one; A+ for the aroma but lacking in the flavor and overall feel of the beer.

Fourth sample in a North Coast beer dinner at Teller’s. Pours a cloudy, dark, red-brown with a small off-white head. Aroma of caramel, brown sugar, roasted malt, nuts, plum, fig, and yeast. Flavor leaned mostly toward the caramel and dark fruits, with a nice maltiness, and notes of brown sugar, nuts, and roast. The alcohol is well-hidden and emerges when warm. Full-bodied, with good carbonation. Smooth, just like the namesake. Nice brew.

Thoroughly enjoyed from a 12oz bottle in a whiskey snifter. The beer pours a nice deep amber color to medium brown, with a lightish tan head that is moderate in size. Carbonation level is perhaps 2.5 atmospheric volumes. Strong and pleasing notes of caramel, toffee, raison, and prunes in the nose. The palate is also extremely pleasing, with a lot of the aforementioned flavors, along with some notes of brown sugar, abbey yeast esters that are pleasantly subtle, and a slight alcoholic character that adds additional complexity. Overall, excellent.

12 oz bottle. Pours a dark amber-brown with a smattering of fast-fading foam and high carbonation evident. Dark sour fruits, malt, and citrus are evident in the nose. Flavor is initially a hint of sour, followed by a solid bready body in the mid-palate, with a hard to pin down finish. Cherries, and an earthy quality emerge on a second sip, and I’m very impressed with how the ABV is disguised here. A really nice offering. Wish it was a 750!

Bottle from Systembolaget. Very nice caramelly aroma. Beautiful reddish colour. Quite sweet malty taste. Medium+ body. Lovely American made Belgian style strong ale and a cool bottle.
