Commercial Description:
With the developing interest in Belgian abbey ales and the monasteries that brew them, it’s time to remind the world that here in the U.S., we have a Monk of our own. Jazz icon Thelonious Monk is the inspiration for North Coast Brewing’s new Belgian-style abbey ale called, appropriately enough, Brother Thelonious. The beer is being released in conjunction with the Thelonious Monk Institute of Jazz (www.monkinstitute.org), and the brewery will make a contribution to the Institute for every case sold to support jazz education. Like a Belgian “Dark Strong Ale”, the beer is rich and robust with an ABV of 9%. The package is a 750 ml bottle with a traditional cork and wire finish and features a label picturing the jazz master himself.

Bottled. An amber beer with a thin orange head. The aroma is sweet malty with notes of hops, straw, and citrus. The flavor is sweet malty with notes of citrus and caramel, as well as a slightly alcohol burn. A bit simple.

(Bottle 75 cl) Courtesy of IrishBoy. Beautiful, clear, warm, orangey brown with a creamy, light brown head leaving some lacework. Fat aroma of caramel and fruit. Medium body, sweetish, lightly burned caramel accents and a touch of hazelnuts. Very subdued bitterness. Quite lovely. 030407

12 fl oz bottle. Pours clear and golden brown with a semi fizzy tan head. Spice, berry fruity and malty aroma. Sweet malty with a solid roasted flavoured and spiced malt base. Lingering spiced and fruity flavoured, lasting into the finish. Slight sticky.

[Bottled at Oliver Twist, Stockholm] Deep ruby, brief head. No sediment. Evidently Belgian style aroma of almond, caramel and a surprising whiff of smoke. Sweet and solidly malty with fairly clean mouthfeel. Almond gets ever more evident, and woody smoke lingers throughout. Packed with interesting flavours, but the mouthfeel leaves something to be desired.

Bottle, 9.4%. Sweet aroma, hint of vanilla. Sweet flavour, some alcohol and some brown sugar. A bit too sweet for me and not quite balanced by the alcohol. Sweet apricot.
