Commercial Description:
With the developing interest in Belgian abbey ales and the monasteries that brew them, it’s time to remind the world that here in the U.S., we have a Monk of our own. Jazz icon Thelonious Monk is the inspiration for North Coast Brewing’s new Belgian-style abbey ale called, appropriately enough, Brother Thelonious. The beer is being released in conjunction with the Thelonious Monk Institute of Jazz (www.monkinstitute.org), and the brewery will make a contribution to the Institute for every case sold to support jazz education. Like a Belgian “Dark Strong Ale”, the beer is rich and robust with an ABV of 9%. The package is a 750 ml bottle with a traditional cork and wire finish and features a label picturing the jazz master himself.

This is a nice, full-bodied beer. Good aroma and a nice head. Flavor is that of dark fruits with a hoppy kick.

Nice yeasty notes: hints of plum and dried cherries, nutty and creamy mouth feel, little toasty malt and a smooth finish. Like most good craft Belgian style ales, the alcohol is well hidden, very tasty, although missing the deep complexities of some others in this style range.

One of the few belgian styles not from Belgium that I enjoy. Lots of head and a complex spice and fruit aroma. Dark fruits on the taste.

Amber in color with a good sized light brown head with very good lacing. The aroma is dominated by dark fruits with a hint of molasses and a strong hops backbone. The flavor is of dark fruits with a little raisin, molasses, oak, and a hint of apples. The texture is creamy. Overall its a very good abbey ale with a very complex and relaxed flavor; very enjoyable

Pours with a light brown head that is mostly lasting over an amber hue. Aroma is of dark fruits - dates, prunes, some grape, and plums and little of hops. Aroma also has some sweetness to it - a little molasses. Dark fruit flavor with some oak, apples. It is a little bit bitter on the finish, not so much though. Sweet beginning. Creamy to the palate with lively carbonation. a very good beer.

this is one the beer closest to a belgian from us of a that I’ve ever encountered. Bravo! Big foamy frothy textured head and plenty of lace. Soft texture, slightly perfumey. Clear dark rich amber with red highlights. Not too sweet. Great balance. Almost a session considering what it is.
