Commercial Description:
With the developing interest in Belgian abbey ales and the monasteries that brew them, it’s time to remind the world that here in the U.S., we have a Monk of our own. Jazz icon Thelonious Monk is the inspiration for North Coast Brewing’s new Belgian-style abbey ale called, appropriately enough, Brother Thelonious. The beer is being released in conjunction with the Thelonious Monk Institute of Jazz (www.monkinstitute.org), and the brewery will make a contribution to the Institute for every case sold to support jazz education. Like a Belgian “Dark Strong Ale”, the beer is rich and robust with an ABV of 9%. The package is a 750 ml bottle with a traditional cork and wire finish and features a label picturing the jazz master himself.

This is literally like liquid bread with a bit of plum juice, and a bit of an alcohol bite. Really smooth, with a bit of cola in the mouthfeel, some great dark fruitiness on the palate, and a bit of bittersweet caramel maltiness. Tons of yeastiness, with lots of chocolate and a bit of caremelized brown sugar. Super tasty and relaxing!

Nice, thick brown / red pour, coffee froth. Nice malty straight forward nose. Molasssas, alcohol taste with a bitter / metallic linger. Great smooth palate, overall a nice beer!

Bottle courtesy of HogtownHarry. Deep mahogany pour unleashed a beige foam that left minute lacing. Nose was bready, had pit fruits and tobacco with essences of yeast and caramel malts. Slightly smokey flavour profile was elevated with sweet molasses and caramel, tobacco and yeasty, bready crust like earthy flavours. Good beer. Thanks Harry!

750 ml bottle.I remember I used to see this bottle every time I walked in to a local distributor, and used to think the label was some sort of cheap gimmick. After seeing it in a beer a while back and actually reading the label I was very pleased to see that the label was no gimmick and that a percentage of proceeds go to a good cause. It poured a mahogany brown, with no head. the nose was belgian yeasts and lots of fruits, some citrus some prunes. Very nicely carbonated with similar flavors to the nose. The finish had a slight acidy-alcohol type bite to it. It also tasted a bit raw, maybe aging would help, but overall a nice american belgian style beer.

[Bottle] Pours a beautiful, clear amber with a medium off white head. Aroma is sweet and malty, with notes of raisins, fruity yeast, and maybe some spices. Flavor is raisin forward, with the spices coming through a little bit. Nice, light mouthfeel, and the alcohol is barely detectable. Very nice Belgian style brew.

Poured a clear reddish brown color. Had this baby on draft from the Midway. Couldn’t get a great impression of the aroma but what I did get was caramel malt goodness. Flavor was very fruity upfront with some cherry. It then faded to a chewy malt and caramel flavor. Next up some grape and raisin. Finally on the finish is a bitter hop flavor. There is a bit of an alcoholic bit to it that is a little offputting but that’s the only knock for now.
