| 3.2 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 3/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 13/20 | Mar 28, 2008 Bright brown sugary colour. Rich brown sugar nose with light esters. Sweet sugars and caramel. The body is a bit on the thin side, but fairly sticky as well. There’s some nice tartness, to take a bit of the edge off the sweet. Sticky, brown sugar finish. | 3.2 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 3/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 13/20 | Mar 17, 2008 12oz. Bottle: Sweet aroma. Aroma of malts, dark fruits, light spices, sour mix, candi sugar, and a bit of yeast. Poured deep amber in color with a small off-white head that diminished immediately. Ever so slightly hazy. Sparkling. Flavor is medium sweet. Tastes of toasted malts, raisins, dark fruits, light alcohol, grapes, and cloves. Medium body. Chalky texture. Lively carbonation. Sweet finish. | 3.4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 3/5 | 7/10 | 4/5 | 14/20 | Mar 14, 2008 Appearance: Pours a lightly hazy, mahogany-hued body with a small, beige head.
Smell: Caramel malts, candi sugar, and a dark fruitiness make up the bulk of the aroma. Lesser notes of bananas, spice, and booze.
Taste: Sweet, candyish caramel with a fruitiness consisting of plums and unripened cherries. There’s banana and clove present, but remain light and don’t clobber you in the mouth like other Belgian-minded beers. The alcohol rides in on the spice and provides for a warming finish.
Mouthfeel: Medium-bodied. Medium carbonation.
Drinkability: Decent enough, I suppose, but when I turn to North Coast, it’s usually for their outstanding Old Stock and Old Rasputin brews. jmuhops (663), Winchester, Virginia, USA
| 3 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 3/5 | 6/10 | 4/5 | 11/20 | Mar 5, 2008 Pours neither gold nor Burgundy. Instead, the beer is lightly hazy amber with a small white head. The nose is full of metallic dark fruit, heavy on the prunes, and a lot of must. Mouth full of phenols, rubbery and plasticine. The middle is sweet dark fruit, and the finish tastes old--in a good way. Not entirely bad, but not something I’d buy again. blutt59 (2148), Dallas, Texas, USA
