Commercial Description:
Originally brewed for Whole Foods. Belgian yeasts are legendary for the fruity flavor and floral bouquet they give beer. Hundreds are used by Belgian brewers and each is unique. Cru d'Or, a Belgian Style Abbey Ale is an homage to this magic ingredient and the result is a world class beer that is lush and profoundly aromatic with a warming finish. Being organic, Cru d'Or is brewed with the same reverence for pure ingredients as the Abbey and Farmhouse Belgian ales of the past. Delicious.

Pours dark amber with a huge 1-inch head that diminishes to a 1cm. tan rim. Tight webs of lace. Nose is candy malts, small caramel, roasty wheat grain. Same tastes with more pronounced roasted beans and red apple with a dash of metallic aftertaste. Slight off-balance of sweet to maltiness. I couldn’t detect any yeast here. A bit too sweet for my tastes. Medium carbonation/full body.

A dark ruby, tanned leather color. Poured with a bit of a tan head, but that dissipated quite quickly. My girlfriend is complaining about me watching Sunday night football, and because the Bears will probably get killed, I’ll try to get to the point. First sip is slightly alcohol tinged, and almost bubble gum style. A bit chewy with malts and yeast and some maybe chocolate bits. Actually, this seems to taste a lot like banana bread. Well here’s the kickoff and my girlfriend is threatening to turn off the game if I don’t get off so I got to go.

Smells sweet with lots of alcohol. Pours a nice dark amber with a head that goes away quickly. Tastes sweet with some caramel and fruit and has a nice full body with some tasty hops, but it has too much alcohol in the finish. The overabundance of alcohol ruins this one for me. the North Coast Pranqster is a much better alternative and it’s right next to this on the shelf at wholefoods!

Cloudy, reddish brown color. Small white head disapates quickly. Sweet fruity malt aroma reminiscent of plums. Yeasty malt flavor with a hint of brandy. Not unpleasant but lacking in character.

Pours a dark ruby with little head. Nose is extremely sweet. Cherry tones with an extremely strong alcohol influence. Flavor is too overpowered by alcohol and sweetness. Off the first swig alone I can tell that this one is trying hard, but is too immature to deliver a moving experience. I do get some plums in the midst of all of that. Feel is average. Syrupy but smooth. Drinkabilty remains low due to the lack of a kick ass flavor stream and the odd feel. North Coast usually does pretty good stuff, but this one is so-so. I woldn’t suggest it or ever go back to it, but I will admit that this flavor profile might not really go along well with my preferences.

Very bready, lots of banana flavors. Pours a dark amber color-little amber colored head of foam. Good aroma of banana. Big flavor of bananas and ginger bread. Yeasty goodness. I like this one.
