Commercial Description:
Originally brewed for Whole Foods. Belgian yeasts are legendary for the fruity flavor and floral bouquet they give beer. Hundreds are used by Belgian brewers and each is unique. Cru d'Or, a Belgian Style Abbey Ale is an homage to this magic ingredient and the result is a world class beer that is lush and profoundly aromatic with a warming finish. Being organic, Cru d'Or is brewed with the same reverence for pure ingredients as the Abbey and Farmhouse Belgian ales of the past. Delicious.

Cru d’Or Organic Belgian Style Ale
Beautiful amber color; poor head. Some malt and a lot of caramel; low bitterness, and without character, not really Belgian Style.

Bottle...dark in color and extremely sweet, tastes and smells mainly of bananas and perhaps some dried fruit. Little fizz which left a very syrupy mouthfeel. Aftertaste was strangely barleywine-like, with a slight bitterness.

Deep dark sugary malt aroma. Tinge of cooked brown sugar. Hazy cream coffee color with an off-white head that laced lightly into oblivian. With strong light the color is actually ripe reddish stone fruit or red amber (my eyes are dilated at the moment). Medium bodied, thickening as the almost non-existant carbonation leaves. This is dark fruits with brown sugar and caramel or toffee candy. The darkness is in the finish along with a suggestion of hop. There is some spiciness. Overall this is the "stout" of belgian browns.

Clear light brown body with a tiny tan head. The aroma is plums, toffee and candi sugar. The flavor is raisins, overripe plums, brown sugar and toffee. Medium body is soft but thin with light carbonation.

Bottle in a tumbler. Pours reddish brown with a light brown head and lasting ring. Malty aroma with hints of raisin, yeast, earth. Sweet flavor with fruity raisiny essence and some caramelization. Lingering but not cloying. Nice soft mouthfeel with medium body. Much better than I remember. I always wonder about misnamed beers. I remembered this one as trying to be a golden strong, hence the name, but it is much more like a dark strong or a double. Flavor is surprisingly similar to Dogfish Raison D’Etre which I had recently. A very good beer.

Opaque cidery brown with medium tan head. Rich appley plummy aroma has a bit of booze to it. Taste is very malty with a spicy finish. Not bad for an organic product. $2/12oz

Bottle from JCB - thanks Jason! Sweet and malty aroma with some dough and alcohol. Raisin, molasses, dark fruit. Some candis. Light red body with a short beige head. Taste is sweetly malty, Belgian yeast with raisins and grape and a hint of alcohol. Lots of fruit, with candis. Tart and sweet and lightly bitter. Full body with some enjoyable swishability and crispness from the carbonation. Has some Dubbel and Saison qualities. Flavorful, robust, and a lot of fun.

Aroma of bourbon and caramel. Heavy but soft. Pronounced banana flavor. Finishes with lingering honey sweetness. Little complexity or character.
