Metaphorically speaking, this seems to be the younger and smaller brother to North Coast’s Old Rasputin Russian Imperial Stout. Some of the same basic characteristics are present, such as the coffee, chocolate, roasted malt, brown sugar, et cetera, but without that profound eye-opening flavor and high alcohol content. Also considerably watery compared to the Old Razz. Other than that it is excellent. And by excellent I mean that this would be the premier beer for most breweries, that’s how good it is. Yet in this case it plays 2nd fiddle to the virtuosic Old Rasputin. Either way, you can’t lose, as everything North Coast touches turns to gold.

Near black in colour, ruby edges, small but lingering beige coloured head, good lacing. The aroma is lightly sweet, underlying sourness provides a distraction, some very light chocolate and coffee. The flavour is slightly roasty, some earthy malts, light sweetness, nutty. Lightly bitter mouthfeel, medium/light body, medium/light carbonation. Finishes with some chalky bitterness, ending sweet.

Its fairly decent, the coffee and roast come out more as this warms.

355ml bottle obtained in a trade with JohnnyJ, thanks John.

12 fl oz bottle. Pours black with a huge creamy and tan head. Roasted malt and somewhat wet woody hops note. Flavour is hardroasted malt and solid bitter. Goes into a more smooth flavour before the finish with a creamy texture containing notes of coffee and malt. Mild chocolate note too. Dry bitter finish with more of the same roasted malt flavour coming through.

Pours dark with a dark tan head. Lots of roasted malts with dark chocolate and coffee. Decent balance from hops at first but to much sweetness on the finish. Could be a lot better if not for the lingering sweetness.
