Nose is a pleasant malt chocolate-toffe, and the taste follows suit perfectly. Mouthfeel of this medium bodied beer is sweet and slightly tingly, and the finish is smooth and sweet.
A nice tasty beer. doubleipa (224), Georgia, USA
| 3.2 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 5/10 | 5/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 12/20 | Oct 11, 2007 1 inch head, frothy, light-brown. Weak aroma, toasted, burnt, mild coffee. Nothing much else. Not very impressed. Would have expected more from the brewery that produces Rasputin. Coffee was th eonly distinctive aroma or taste. I’m not sure how old this bottle is since I picked it up at KClingers in Hanover, PA. BREWMUSKCLES (1080), New Jersey, USA
| 3.3 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 3/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 14/20 | Oct 9, 2007 i get a kind of fruity cherry like flavor and then the coffee.and that coffee flavor is a bit bitter like old or burnt coffee. i get alcohol. a port wine like aroma. a bit strange and i get into that. a bit light and refreshing in substance yet it is quite a bit heavier on the flavor. noticeably harsh and laid back bitter finish that dissapates in some order. freaky little number. slick/creamy coldbrewky (733), Saugerties, New York, USA
| 3.6 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 16/20 | Oct 8, 2007 Creamy and smooth. Head lasts and lasts. Pours a medium brown yet looks black in the glass. Procured at Half Time in Poughkeepsie. Missed out on the coffee notes. Mellow crisp finish. Body surprisingly light. Nice bottlecap. BelgianBeerGal (1303), Sabbatical in Las Vegas, Nevada, USA
| 3.9 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 15/20 | Oct 5, 2007 Bottle poured into pint glass. This is a great dry stout. Pours out a nice dark brown colour with a medium brown head. Great creamy lacing. Aroma was unsweetened chocolate. Flavour was more milky chocolate with a hint of bitterness. Really enjoyed this beer. pdxmickey (33), Spokane, Washington, USA
| 3.4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 13/20 | Sep 30, 2007 This was a classic dark stout with a very rich taste and heavy texture. The aroma and flavor have a strong roasted coffee sense to them. A very drinkable and enjoyable stout, but not soon to become one of my favorite stouts. Wulfstan (509), California, USA
| 3.6 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 3/5 | 7/10 | 4/5 | 14/20 | Sep 24, 2007 Updated: Jan 28, 2008This is a good, rich stout with a decent, but not very long-lasting head and rich flavour for a dry stout. It is overall well-rounded and balanced, but the coffee and bitter elements seem just a tad too strong. jlruthven (137), Milledgeville, Georgia, USA
| 3.9 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 16/20 | Sep 24, 2007 I’ve been disappointed with any stout not carrying the word "imperial" in front of it for some time now. Old 38, then, is a pleasing reminder of what a good basic stout can be. Poured coal-black, with brown highlights when held up to the light, quickly dissipating head. Nose is heavily coffee-based, with big roasted chocolate coming through as well. Taste has more chocolate, coffee, and tons of malt. Finishes clean. North Coast hasn’t let me down yet.
