| 3.4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 3/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 14/20 | Aug 3, 2007 Deepest ruby prune pour, almost black... frothy tan head that diminishes to trace. Sweet, roasted malty nose. Not too dry... Roasted grains and malts with a hint of sweetness upfront. Toast in the mid-palate, with slightly roasted bitters in the finish. Roasted coffee beans in the effervescence/aftereffects. Zesty mouthfeel with lively carbonation levels... Average round body sums up the entire brew.... average... certainly not bad, and went down well. Just not memorable. jake65 (1725), Williston, North Dakota, USA

Nose is mild of toasted malt, coffee, and cocoa. Flavor is malty, roasty, and mild coffee. Not real distinct flavor - mostly the roasted malt tones. I’ll stick with Old Rasputin. jstraw (773), Chicago, Illinois, USA

| 4.9 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 10/10 | 5/5 | 10/10 | 5/5 | 19/20 | Jul 25, 2007 Updated: Aug 4, 2007Robust malty with a slightly coffee aroma, poured a dark brown with a large creamy head that was slightly tan in color, head stayed on most of the way, eventually giving way to thicker creamy cap, left good lacing on pint, great roasted malt flavor with chocolate, coffee, walnut, slight smoke and slight burnt malt flavors mixed in. Slightly sweet taste gives way to very slightly bitter with a light touch of smoke, very nice balance. Slightly heavier than light body, creamy and smooth texture, lively carbonation at first gives way to a nice soft carbonation, a very nice medium bitteersweet semi-dry finish. A very good stout! This has become one of my favorite Stouts. A great job by North Coast on Old#38. Will definitely drink many of these. Served in a Pint. shendrix (478), Waukesha, Wisconsin, USA
| 3.4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 14/20 | Jul 23, 2007 Quite a good stout, with a nose of coffee and roasted walnuts. The palate brings through the coffee notes in a understated way, with roasted ( if not burnt) walnuts coming through a tad too harshly. Somewhat offset by a nice, smoky alcohol bite that is just at the threshold of one’s awareness and a bit of hops mingling with the roasted barley in this brew.
