After enjoying Old Raspy so much, I was pumped to try Old No. 38. The stout pours black, with an average sized head. The aromas are of coffee, and burnt malts. The mouthfeel in this stout is definitely too thin. The taste follows the smell, as usual, and the burnt malt overrides most of the flavor. There is some sort of metallic/acidic aftertaste to this one too, which is not at all enjoyable. Back to Old Raspy for me!" awaisanen (1279), Irvine, California, USA
| 3.5 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 14/20 | Jun 29, 2006 From 12oz Bottle. Pours a deep, chocolaty brown color with a thick finger of large bubbled, toasty head. Aroma of burned white toast, a touch of bittersweet chocolate, a splash of vanilla, and a suggestion of dry oak. Pleasant and well balanced in a classic dry stout sort of way. The mouthfeel is medium to heavy boied with an initial crispness to the carbonation that gives way to a creamy smack. More of the toasted, bready malts from the aroma come forward on the palate, along with a whisper of anise. Final smack of an mild bittersweet mocha espresso with a sprinkle of grassy hops. A nice black, nitro stout, loads of roast coffee toast burt flavours that complemented the oysters really well. Quite hoppy for a stout, something that I’m coming to expect with beer here. Color is black or found to be dark brown if examined closely. Nose hints of roasted barely and the flavor is the same with addition of coffee and creamer. An above average stout. This should be more available.
