A nice dry, imperial stout with great roasted coffee and a fruity nose. The fruit undergirds the roast. Great lingering head.
I really like this type of stout. Not as thick or syrupy as some, very dry. Really like this beer. Honestly not sure what aging a year did to it, might even be better fresh. But, in my opinion, in terms of price, availability and quality, Old Rasputin can’t be beat. Not stellar, just very, very solid, and some times that’s more than enough. Elwood (654), Leesburg, Virginia, USA Apr 17, 2009 12 oz. bottle. Pours pitch black with a foamy tan head. Notes of coffee, caramel, a little alcohol, and some raisin. Medium carbonation with a medium-rich mouthfeel. A good bit of dryness in there too. Tastes of coffee, raisins, a sharp bitterness, some chocolate, alcohol, a light mineral note, and a bit of soap on back end. It is much lighter on the tongue than I was expecting. The alcohol isn’t hidden that well and overall I feel like the beer is just a little raw. I am hoping this one improves with age, but it wasn’t as great as some of the reviews I’ve read. I will age a few and definite do a retaste. ericandersnavy (1039), crossroads, Texas, USA Apr 15, 2009 4 pack picked up at metzlers in denton, tx. poured black with a nice tan head. aroma of chocolate, coffee, and prunes. flavor was dark roast, coffee, and alcohol. body was medium. i was a little disappointed with this. i will have to re-rate my last bottle. roborb (59), Raleigh, North Carolina, USA Apr 13, 2009 12 oz bottle poured into a Sam Adam’s Perfect Pint glass. This RIS poured a dark black with a 1 1/2 finger mocha head that lasted forever. It smelled of roasted malts, chocolate and a faint smell of coffee. The taste is dominated by bitter chocolate up front. That quickly changes to a creamy roasted malt/coffee finish. This beers seems to stay on your tongue for a while. This is an awesome RIS and a bargain at its price. Everyone should search this beer out if it is available in their area. thefrutigers (100), , Arizona, USA Apr 12, 2009 bottle 12 oz: Poured black with a medium dark brown head that diminished in a tulip glass. Nice roasted smell with a hint of coffee. Taste was at first bitter chocolate with coffee, and not very sweet, but very bitter. A nice balance. Taste of chocolate turns to dark roasted malt. Bitterness hangs around alittle while, but you just want more. I agree that this seems to sum up the style almost perfectly. I am going to have this one again and again. smcolw (314), Wayland, Massachusetts, USA Apr 10, 2009 Smell--Rich chocolate malt aroma; some burnt coffee
Appearance--The color of dark chocolate; not even opaque. Beige head that quickly goes down.
Taste--Predominately coffee, some caramel. Excellent hop ending that perfectly balances the powerful malt.
Mouthfeel--Warm oily texture; nice hop bitterness lingering after the swallow.
Drinkability--Very true to the style. While I personally wouldn’t repeatedly drink Imperial Stouts all night, this would be a top pick for this style JimVanGumby (11), Cottleville, Missouri, USA Apr 9, 2009 I had drank it from the bottle before, but yesterday I tried it on tap. It was incredible, despite the high alcohol content, its hard to find traces of it in the flavor. Instead there was toffee and chocolate coating the entire inside of my mouth and throat. Very rich and what a stout should be. Bukowski9 (89), Piqua, Ohio, USA Apr 9, 2009 Updated: Sep 7, 2009Bottle pour.Smell of coffee, chocolate, little wood.Dark black pour with a decent off-white head.Taste is coffee, chocolate, molasses a little, smoke, and malt.Hits the mouth pretty hard but has a good balance of flavor, alcohol wasn;t overpowering either.Really good stout.
