fidelis83 (707), Clinton, Iowa, USA Dec 31, 2008 Pours black as coal with a thin ring of dark brown when held to the light. Head is tall caramel brown and last forever while leaving a good amount of lacing, beautiful beer. Aroma is huge on roast, chocolate liquor, coffee, molasses cookies, butterscotch, and some nice herbal, floral hops. Flavor is roasty, nice amount of coffee, bitter hops, dark roast, chocolate, a hint of toasty toffee, and some dark fruit. Overall it is a fairly sweet brew with a decent amount of alcohol coming through in the flavor. FInish is bitter and roasty with a really interesting herbal hop, dark malt aftertaste. Rciesla (3500), Exit 15W, New Jersey, USA Dec 30, 2008 Bottle. Pours a black nectar with a brown head. Sweet and malty, roasty coffee notes, light dark chocolate and a floral bitter roasty/hoppy finish. Good. zeke626 (301), Minneapolis, Minnesota, USA Dec 28, 2008 12 oz. bottle, pours a pitch black body with rich brown foam head that disappears quickly. Aroma of roasted malts, chocolate, toffee, and dark fruit. Strong flavor of roasted malts along with flavors of bitter coffee, cocoa, and molasses. Not quite as heavy as most imperial stouts, but the mouthfeel is solid and a bit oily. Finishes dry with a roasted malt and cocoa bitterness. satan165 (540), River Grove, Illinois, USA Dec 26, 2008 12 oz poured to trappist glass. head is non existant save small wisps along sides of glass. little to zero lacing. nose of cocoa nibs. coffee is highly muted or not present. color is not translucent at all. mouthfeel is slick and and nearly dry, little coating. flavor of bakers chocolate, grapes, prunes, some other dark pit fruits. booze is hardly present, extremely smooth. easy to see why its one of the best. had this a few times but took me a while to whip up a review larryLSB (139), La Selva Beach, California, USA Dec 25, 2008 Updated: Feb 10, 2009From the bottle on Christmas Eve with cookies...Nice dark amber color, with nose of chocolate and rasberry poured a nice tan head. Tasted of bittersweet chocolate with a nice dry finish. Great dessert beer. foundmd (163), Cincinnati, Ohio, USA Dec 24, 2008 12oz bottle. An old favorite that always seems to be readily available. Pours pitch black with a nice tan head. Pleasing aroma with flavors of roasted malts, chocolate, coffee, and a hint of dark fruit and toffee. Very nice on the palate with medium astringency. Recommended. resevil787 (1), , Arizona, USA does not count Dec 23, 2008 On tap at Fathers Office. Pours a dark brown color. Smells distinctly of coffee. Tastes the same with chocolate, alcohol slightly present. Am very happy to see several places in Tucson now carry the four packs. tarheels86 (700), Washington DC, USA Dec 23, 2008 330 mL. Pours a used motoroil pitch black with a dark brown head that lasts and lasts. Great lacework. Nose is roasted malt, dark chocolate, cocoa, maple syrup, and spicy hops. Taste is full-bodied and powerful with lots of molasses, maple syrup, vanilla extract, and spicy hops balanced by a huge roasted malt presence. Oily mouthfeel. Powerful at 9% but is cleverly hidden making this almost a session beer. Definitely not a sipper like Bells Expedition or Dogfish World Wide Stout.
