yobdoog (1426), Woodridge NY, New York, USA Sep 17, 2009 How have I not rated this. Always enjoyable. Dark and rich with an off white head. Aroma is strong and sweet, roasted malts, coffee, chocolate and a hint of bitter hops. Flavor is very strong roasted malts, coffee and a bit hot when fresh. Mellows out, had a few year old bottle recently and it was great. Bitterness mellows and becomes a bit more sweet and sticky just the way I like it. daniele (1642), Italy Sep 14, 2009 scura schiuma media discreta persitenza naso intenso tipicio tostao con note fruttate molto invitantye in bocca piutosto morbida bilanciata ma anche abbastanz riscaldanate Macadem (100), Lethbridge, Alberta, Canada Sep 14, 2009 Pours dark brown to black with no light penetration, and a foamy brown head that fades rapidly. Smells of coffee, dark chocolate, black berries, prune, and raisins. Tastes of bitter coffee, and is quite fruity, mostly of dark berries. I drank this young, and have another 3 bottles aging, i plan on re-rating after it sits for a couple years. This beer would undoubtedly be terrific after aging. Pitch black, with a milkshake head, lovely! Woody aroma with dark chocolate, coffee; slightly fruity and hoppy too. Big woody coffee flavor with chocolate, ask, raspberry and other dark fruits, a slight tartness and a huge bitter roast and hop finish. Great stuff. Fratto (670), Arlington, Texas, USA Sep 13, 2009 Black color, smells strongly of coffee, alcohol is masked well with coffee flavors and some Werther’s like toffee. Very nice. Nena (120), Seattle, Washington, USA Sep 11, 2009 Updated: Oct 21, 2009Pours black with a quickly falling tan head. The malt dominated aroma is of toffee, brown sugar, and prunes. Lots of toffee and coffee in the flavor. The finish has some hops on it and is rather alcoholic tasting. This is one of my favorite beers and is really affordable for the quality. jonnabrix (136), Newberrytown, Pennsylvania, USA Sep 10, 2009 One of the great, yet affordable, Imperial Stouts. Pours a dark black, with a nice brown head. Aroma of deep malts, coffee, and some hop. Flavor follows suit, with a bit of alcohol. No complaints with this one. njmoons (52), New Jersey, USA Sep 10, 2009 I was looking forward to this highly rated Russian Imperial. Unfortunetly I was disappointed. This probably has more to do with an aversion to Cascade Hops (the grapefruity flavor), then a poor beer.
I find the cascade hop flavor overpowers the aroma, yeast, and malt flavor. I know many people really enjoy this flavor and I find it in a lot of Russion Imperials.
So for me it never had a chance.
