Excellent aroma that is a little winey with hint of coffee, black cherry and dark chocolate. Color is an intense, deep brown/mahagony. Flavor is very rich with coffee, dark chocolate and roasted malts. A slight bitterness in the finish offsets the dark malts in the body. Nice alcohol warming which tingles on the tongue. Medium bodied with bitter chocolate, mocha, black coffee, burnt malt, hint of cacao and anise flavors finishing in a nice alcoholic warmth roasted malt bitterness. | 4.3 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 5/5 | 9/10 | 4/5 | 18/20 | Jan 23, 2006 Pours jet black into a snifter. Fruit and roasted chocolate aromas. Head quickly disspates to hug edge of glass. Medium sweet and heavy bitter -- almost like a chocolate espresso bean. Schroppfy (1813), Ohio, USA
| 3.9 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 5/5 | 8/10 | 5/5 | 13/20 | Dec 10, 2002 Have had this twice in the last few days; once in my hotel room in FL, and once at home. Has a wood/oak barrel aroma, very smoky, roasty. More substantial head than most imperials, really tiny bubbles that I feel help the palate rating rather than take away. High alcohol content not immediately apparent. A small hint of berry, perhaps dark cherry (?), and super warming. This is a big boy, and maybe my 2nd fav Imperial behind, almost up there in drinkability with Storm King. Lumpy (1802), Carrollton, Texas, USA
| 3.6 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 9/10 | 3/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 14/20 | Apr 28, 2004 Bottle. 100% opaque with a very thin beige head that fades very quick. Smells like a bag of fresh ground coffee beans and malt. Very nice nose. Upon tasting, notes of coffee, bitters, plum, toffee, and malt come through. Finish is bitter, like iced coffee. The taste reminds me of just that-a strong iced coffe with malty and alcohol notes. The finish is long and bitter. This is def. a good beer, but probably not worthy of a 4.17. illinismitty (1801), Nashville, Tennessee, USA
| 4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 4/5 | 17/20 | Jan 28, 2006 Bottle. I have had this before, but this is my first time rating it. Pours black with a thin brown head. Aroma of dark roasted malt, coffee, and a hint of port. Flavor is of bitter chocolate, burnt malt, and coffee. Finishes bitter, somewhat dry, and woody. A very solid imperial stout. However after having Bells Expedition and Alesmith Speedway, this just falls a little short. But still very good and much easier to get a hold of. Thank you North Coast for another great beer that I can get here in beer hell (tennessee) YourDarkLord (1800), Urbana, Illinois, USA
| 4.3 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 5/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 18/20 | Jun 15, 2004 Damned good stuff. Black as tar with an ample frothy tan head. Aroma of roasted coffee and quality chocolate. Some anise. Brandy. Port. Very complex and interesting. Medium to heavy body. The flavor was rich and robust. The coffee and chocolate with the brandy/port hints. Excellent. One of the best stouts. Palidor19 (1798), Brandon, Florida, USA

Not the worst but was expecting more
