TheBeerLover (1013), DC Metro Area, USA Jan 25, 2006 Updated: Nov 24, 2006 Old Rasputin Russian Imperial stout pours to an opaque jet black color, with a slight tan head, and a soft carbonation. The nose on this beer is incredible. Huge waves of dark chocolate, espresso, licorice, vanilla, roast, piney hop aroma, and peppery alcohol flood the nose. The palate is massive on this beer, just jam packed with intense and robust flavors. Dark chocolate, sweet malt, vanilla, licorice, and coffee coat the tongue. This beer is full and comforting on the tongue as it gently glides down the throat. Old Rasputin finishes with more big, robust coffee and licorice up front, then ends with a roasty, bitter, very warming, soothing, high octane burn.
This beer is a world class example of Imperial Stout, and one of my all time favorites. Imperial stouts make a fantastic after dinner drink, or night cap, truly a beer to slowly sip and savor. Their intense, and complex flavors also make them ideal desert beers.
GMCC2181 (553), Bear, Delaware, USA Jan 6, 2009 Bottle from robert at stateline. Its about black as black can get. Good toffee colored head that faded away. Aroma of coffee and roasted malts. Taste is coffee, lots of roasted malt, dark chocolate and maybe even some dark fruits. Texture is rich, not thick though. Almost oat like. Overall a good beer. Thanks Robert! bradlyc77 (99), Sebastopol, California, USA Jan 5, 2009 Pours black with 2 finger brown head. Nice lacing. Tastes of roasted malt, chocolate, coffee, and toasted sugar, with some hints of raisin/dates and dried cherries. Sweet and malty, minor alcohol flavor but not overpowering. A complex and quite enjoyable brew. hoppopotamus (99), Brooklyn, New York, USA Jan 4, 2009 Pours a jet black with a small tan head that leaves lace. Aroma is obviously roasted malt dominated, with accents of chocolate, coffee, alcohol, and even some oak and licorice. The flavor is a more chocolatey sweet roasted flavor, with a lingering aftertaste of dark chocolate. Delicious taste, even better aroma! pjweaver (125), Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, USA Jan 4, 2009 Glass from bottle.
Pours a pure black color, with a mocha colored head. Aroma is remarkable, dark chocolate, espresso, currants, booze, toasty malts. Boozy flavor with tons of chocolate and coffee, hints of red fruits, sweet and warm. Good overall beer....(did a blind tasting of this beer at a 7/3/6/3/14 3.3, but I think i was pretty shit faced at that point.)
fidelis83 (221), Clinton, Iowa, USA Dec 31, 2008 Pours black as coal with a thin ring of dark brown when held to the light. Head is tall caramel brown and last forever while leaving a good amount of lacing, beautiful beer. Aroma is huge on roast, chocolate liquor, coffee, molasses cookies, butterscotch, and some nice herbal, floral hops. Flavor is roasty, nice amount of coffee, bitter hops, dark roast, chocolate, a hint of toasty toffee, and some dark fruit. Overall it is a fairly sweet brew with a decent amount of alcohol coming through in the flavor. FInish is bitter and roasty with a really interesting herbal hop, dark malt aftertaste.
