Commercial Description:
As a continuation of North Coast Brewing Co.’s commitment to quality, our Old Stock Ale is crafted in the tradition of our critically acclaimed Pranqster Belgian Style Golden Ale and Old Rasputin Imperial Stout. It’s brewed with classic floor-malted Maris Otter Pale Malt and Fuggles Hops imported from England, so it’s a beer to be served proudly. Like a fine wine, North Coast’s Old Stock Ale is intended to be laid down. With an original gravity of over 1100 and a generous hopping rate, Old Stock Ale is well-designed to round-out and mellow with age. North Coast Brewing Co. Old Stock Ale is a vintage dated ale. We produce a small quantity each year and it remains available from release date until our stock is depleted.

Pours amber into a snifter. White head recedes to skim surface. Alcohol and raisin aromas. Tingly sweet malt with dried pit fruit from front to back and a sharp, dry, alcohol finish.

12/28/07 From 2006 bottle. Aroma is quite alcoholic with a fairly soury dark fruit note. Appearance is medium brown, very slightly hazy, with a low off-white head. Flavor is fruity malt forward with an alcoholic finish, very good, but simpler than expected. Mouthfeel is full bodied with a low syrup character and light carb bite. Overall, very cool and quite easy drinking for the style, one of the only I could drink all night long.

2007 bottle, and drinking lovely even in its youth. It’s got a far more aggressive malt profile than in previous years, with a big toffee slap in the face that more or less tames the lively hopping in, say, the 2005 vintage. But it’s certainly very enjoyable, even if drinking a bit rough right now (also a bit boozy, dontcha know). Some bourbon and dark fruit notes towards the end. Really solid now, and once it settles down in a couple years it should be magnificent.

I cannot believe I’ve never rated this. A comfort beer of sorts . . . Pours ruby and golden. Aroma is plummy and malty. Flavor is just packed with a nice bitterness, very mild sweetness, and a hint of tartness. Not sure what it is, but this beer is very enjoyable.

2007 bottle. Careful with this one..... It’ll whip that ass if you aint ready for it. Muddy, murky brown pour, not much to speak of in the way of a head. Definitely get a bourbon aroma from this one with some malt as well. Man, this tastes like whiskey. Very strong oaky taste to this along with some sweetness and malt. Finishes pretty hot but that’s to be expected for a 2007. Very warming drink here. Got a few more bottles that I’m putting away for at least 2 more years. This needs aging because its going to be a damn smooth barleywine but its just not there yet.

2004 Vintage, consumed 12/16/07 12oz, pours a nice amber color, with a very thin head, taste is very smooth with no distinct alcohol burn, easy to drink but meant to be sipped, still tasting of dark fruits and a late vanilla smoothness becomes apparent as it warms.. very nice for a beer 3 years old. EDIT for 2006 version tried 10/28/08: Bought from Chucks recently where it had been sitting, taste is barely oxidized but still definitely drinkable, this is 11.6% version, very smooth, with malt and carmel. but a lack of vanilla as found in the 04, no alcohol burn but definitely high in the ABV, still pleasant to drink.. cant wait to try the other years.

Cloudy amber/caramel color with no head. Strong bourbon aroma. Taste is a complex mix of bourbon, caramel and malts. Very enjoyable!

Bottle, 2003. Cloudy brown, with a tan head. Aroma is malt, caramel, toffee, and dark fruit. Flavor is malt, fruit, alcohol, and sugar. Four years old, and still pretty good.
