Commercial Description:
Named for the delicate engravings popularized by 19th century seafarers, Scrimshaw is a fresh tasting Pilsner brewed in the finest European tradition from Munich and Klages malts, Hallertauer and Tettnang hops. Scrimshaw has a subtle hop character, a crisp, clean palate, and a dry finish.

Pours a cloudy golden yellow with a very small white froth. Aroma is sweet and malty and very heavy on the wheat and grain. Flavor starts out very sweet and finishes very sweet. There is a small amount of bitterness in between and some hops linger in the aftertaste. Medium body. This beer is all about the malt and it ends up being too sweet. It wasn’t bad but it was middle of the pack at best.

Bottle. Haze free light golden body topped with whit 1-finger head. Aromas of straw, some light hop spice, lightly toasted malts. In flavor, some light maltiness and crisp hop finish. Smooth and crisp, this was an excellent pils. Not my typical beer-of-choice, but good enough to make me seek out other pilsners of good repute.

Pours a clear yellow with a white head. Mild aroma. Obviously pils is not an amazing type of beer, but at least this one actually has some flavor to it. A little bit of hops and mild bitterness. Decent, but nothing special.

Pours a stained glass yellow-amber with a thin, pallid froth. Stale cornflakes and powdered milk scents. Tastes tart and fruity with wheat, paper dust (ever fan a just-opened ream of copy paper?), and barest “raw” barley flavor. Medium bodied… bristling carbonation lends a sharp, glassy texture. Faint chalky and mixed berry aftertaste. Closer to a kolsch, unrecognizeable as a pilsner. Hardly better than a BMC.

(Bottle from Tully’s) Pours lightly hazy gold with a tallish somewhat lumpy, frothy white head. Mild aroma is lightly sourish, somewhat bready, some hints of pine. Spotty specks and patches of lacing. Mouthfeel light-medium, fairly smooth. Flavor is very light sweet malt, a bit more hops than alot of pilseners, esp. European ones. Bitterness builds towards finish, with a lightly piney bitter bite at the end and leaving a light bitter coating on tongue. A bit mediocre overall.

Taste 7/8. Looks: Mostly clear pale yellow. Head is minimal. Aroma: Floral, tea. Taste: Very, very beginning is nice, the rest falls flat and misses the style. Somehow I tasted the hops before the malt; odd. It is like beer crossed with tea. Oh well, won’t purchase again.

Bottle -shared with afire, Gestapo and K, sorry about this one! Poured a hazy bright yellow with white foam head. Good carbonation but then... Smell was just terrible, when something smells like rotting wale piss and tastes like it too there must be something wrong. Poured this out!, Jesus it was awful!

Enjoyed on tap at Mahonney’s in Baltimore. Hallertauer and Tettnang hops. Creamy, easy drinking above-average for the style.
