Nate (2533), Indiana, Pennsylvania, USA Jan 30, 2008 Sampled at the RBPG; growler courtesy of cheapdark. Mild smoky coffee malt notes, burnt dark pretzel grains with some light hoppiness. Dark brown-black clear liquid with no head. Medium watery body with medium-light carbonation. Starts a bit sweet with some chocolate and coffee notes, then turns into more of a roasted grain and light bitter coffee finish with mild acidity. Smoky taste, but a thin and watery after. mtoast (290), Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, USA Jan 29, 2008 Served from growler courtesy of cheapdark at Pittsburgh gathering on 1/27/08. Black in color, quickly dying foam. Astringent bitter grain aroma with some dying notes of dark chocolate. Rich dark chocolate flavor, almost creamy mouthfeel and grainy biscuity finish. LinusStick (1831), Moon Twp, suburb of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, USA Jan 28, 2008 Nice middle of the road stout. Aroma was a bit weak but was coffee and grass. Pour was a nice deep dark brown/black with no head. Taste was very bitter coffee with burnt dark malt coming in and out. There is just a hint of chocolate lingering in the aftertaste. Not enough carbonation to carry the flavors through, but not bad. zebracakes (1214), Washington DC, USA Jan 28, 2008 Growler sampled at the Ratebeer meet-up 01.27.08 at the Sharp Edge Creekhouse. Beer courtesy of cheapdark.
Black brown, thin off white head. Aroma is chocolate, smoke, malt, coffee. Flavor is similar, creamy and bitter. Good stout. I have not made my way to North Country yet, but I think I will have to plan a trip in the near future. cheapdark (2011), Monacatootha, Pennsylvania, USA Jan 26, 2008 Nice roasty aroma. Black as coal. Nice lacing and a little head. Goodly amount of carbonation for a stout, quite enjoyable for a change. Taste is beer filtered thru old wet campfire coals, twice. Finish is mild bitter burned lingering wet wood. Could detect just a hair of bitter chocolate on the finish. MrBeer (276), Erie, Pennsylvania, USA Feb 18, 2007 I really liked this Chocolate Sout. Very dark appearance. Goes down very smooth. Really liked the rich taste.
