Vanilla aroma. Dark coloured and fruity with some alcohol present. A little dryness in a crisp slight roast finish. shawnm213 (884), South Bend, Indiana, USA Aug 18, 2009 Bottle. Pours dark brown with a small head. Notes of bitter coffee, milk chocolate. Flavor was much the same. A nice bittersweet coffee porter. Kind of surprised by the bad reviews phishpond417 (1861), Madison, Wisconsin, USA Aug 4, 2009 Are you guys sure this wasn’t the brown ale? Maybe if they just slide everything down one beer, this one might be closer to the brown then a porter. A light clear copper colour that resembles almost nothing close to a porter. Noticeable caramel flavour that really stands out. Other then that- Another thumbs down satan165 (541), River Grove, Illinois, USA Oct 31, 2008 color is black but very translucent and fleeting (oxymoron, i know) as if artificial. any roasted notes are at a minimum, replaced by subtle and offputting caramel. carbonation is ok, body is a bit thin but acceptable. flavor seems just as artificial as the color. Baumgartner (108), Eau Claire, Wisconsin, USA Jul 14, 2008 Bottle poured to glass. Average head atopa a black, brown brew. Mellow aroma of molasses and moderate grassy smell. Tastes almost a sweet, burnt from the start with a moderate balance of hops bitter to finish it off. fordest (1954), Santee/San Diego, California, USA Dec 6, 2007 GABF. Dark pour. Aromas were a little watered down. Some roastiness on the flavor, but not much else. Just OKAY ChainGangGuy (2523), Kennesaw, Georgia, USA Oct 2, 2007 Appearance: Pours a clear, brownish body with ruby-hued edges and a thin, off-white head.
Smell: Aroma of watered down chocolate and still more of the diacetyl character these Northwoods beers seem to be absolutely riddled with.
Taste: Light, sweet chocolate flavor and a tiny spritz of lemon. The chocolate tries in vain to hide the butter. Finishes with the taste of buttered cocoa.
Mouthfeel: Medium-thin body. Mild carbonation.
Drinkability: The porter qualities failed to hide the glaring flaws of Northwoods. Their stout is up next, so let’s try and keep a little optimism. kp (8400), Woodstock, Georgia, USA Sep 30, 2007 Date: 09/29/2007
