It pours very dark leaving a nice tan head. The aroma is of roasted and chocolate malts. The flavor matches but with depth added by some lighter toasted notes and a slgihtly floral hop bitterness. It is fizzy, but it has a smooth mouthfeel and leaves you refreshed. MartinT (5075), Montreal, Quebec, Canada
| 2.5 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 5/10 | 3/5 | 5/10 | 2/5 | 10/20 | Jul 10, 2009 My Bottom Line:
Bready base malts and strawberry esters nudge a diacetyl bulge in this portly and muddled Dunkel.
Further Personal Perceptions:
-A veil of foam covers the hazy amber-brown.
-The finish is relatively quiet, slightly mineral.
-The body is quite nourishing, but the malts aren’t well developed.
-That diacetyl is quite bothersome in the nose.

Aroma is strong buttercream (uh-oh here we go again, a-la the Oktoberfest). Mouthfeel light-medium, a little watery. Patchy bits of lacing. Flavor is butter, butter, butter plus sourish tang and finally if you can get past that there is some chocolate. Yek. Something must be messed up in their brewing or bottling. This is currently listed as a Vienna here but I’d call it a dunkel (brewer’s description plus chocolatey taste and dark appearance). Pastor (534), Maine, USA

Hazy dark brown translucent body with a quarter inch of light tan head. Smells like caramel and chocolate malts. Tastes rather roasty, chocolate and caramel malts dominate. Somewhat burnt I think, making this one slightly astringent but not overly so. Creamy mouthfeel. Relatively drinkable though. A pretty solid beer, one of this brewery’s best for sure. ruggedman (626), Portland, Maine, USA

It’s a bit darker than other viennas i’ve had but the taste is pretty similar. Big malt and yeast profile. Smells yeasty right from the pour. Very appatizing though, the most surprising thing was the solid coffee aftertaste. Pour is dark brown with some mahogany notes. Tan white head...very foamy at first but retreats to a film. I was happily surprised by this beer. For the type of things i’ve seen from Skowhegan in the past I expected some redneck attempt at a beer. This is actually pretty good!
