Medium sized, light tan head. Tons of lacing. Aroma of citrus hops and sweet malts. Flavor is a wonderful balance of the oaky notes and the chewy hops. Also lurking are some dark fruits and hints of toffee as well. Finish is of spicy hops. Very glad we are now able to get Stone here in Georgia. This is one great beer. Malty, hoppy and oakey aromas! Medium body, full mouthfeel, creamy. Big, rich malty flavor with an even dry/sweet flavor balance. Plenty of supporting hop bitterness and flavor, along with nice oak character. Overall, very well-blended. djd07 (755), Houston, Texas, USA
| 4.3 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 5/5 | 18/20 | Oct 1, 2008 12 oz bottle. Pours a dark cloudy amber with a medium off white head that diminishes rather quickly to a ring around the glass. The aroma is a sweet fruit hops with carmel malt. Decent lacing on the glass. The taste is a bitter hops with a spicy oak finish. Really impressed with this american strong ale from Stone. jhumphries69 (731), Tyrone, Georgia, USA
| 4.2 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 5/5 | 9/10 | 4/5 | 16/20 | Sep 30, 2008 12oz bottle. Pours a deep, brilliantly clear, gorgeous mahogany with a thick, yellowish tan head that lasts decently (but not forever) and leaves may thick and thin wisps of lace on the glass. The aroma is almost chewy with citrus hops and toffee/caramel maltiness. The flavor follows the nose and does not disappoint- a big hop flavor and bitterness - green and leafy up-front - with a big toffee malt along with some bready malt notes, too. As the beer washes back, hints of chocolate and anise arise along with a very nice hop bitterness that is firm and clean with a little citrus bite. The flavor and bitterness of alcohol also begins to rear its head, but it is subtle. The finish is thick with caramel and toffee, noticeable sweet chocolate, and a balancing dose of hop bitterness. There is also a warming sensation in the gullet after a few sips. The mouthfeel is smooth and soft with a nice levity from the crisp but somewhat-light carbonation (which is perfect for this beer - it doesn’t need anymore). The body is medium in fullness - less than expected. Overall, a really fantastic strong ale - absolutely delicious. pintocb (518), Darsville, Georgia, USA
| 3.6 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 15/20 | Sep 29, 2008 Dark amber/brown. Not much head. Balanced aroma, malty with light floral hops and a little salt?!?!? The flavor has a bitter bite but the body is a little more thin that I expected. The oak is muted.
