This adds a much needed softness to what can be an overly bitter and cloying arrogant bastard ale. On tap, so not much on the nose. Palate has herbs, caramel, creamy vanilla, peach pits....very nice. Arrogant bastard as a sipping ale, almost. BanjoDude (29), Kingsport, Tennessee, USA
| 4.3 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 9/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 5/5 | 17/20 | Dec 28, 2009 Out of trappist glass. Great rush of hops from the pour, delicious balance of strength and complexity, the oak adds a nice, subtle flavor that complements the overall brew. A small beige head with good lacing. Got this as an X-mas gift and couldn’t be happier with it. edward_violet (25), Michigan, USA

Wonderful deep red-brown liquid, khaki head.
Sweet, some caramel, hops are definitely there, but balanced with the rest. A bit of sourness.
Slightly piney aftertase.
Will buy again. Recommending to a friend. thedogs (10), Florida, USA

The oaked flavor overwrites that excessively strong hoppy flavor that the double bastard presents. I can say i love this beer. It’s a fantastic mix of drinkability and taste. dnstone (280), Mons, Belgium

| 4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 3/5 | 17/20 | Dec 26, 2009 12oz bottle, best by Oct 19, 2009. Pours dark reddish copper with a nice off-white head. Tons of sticky lacing. Powerful aroma, whole lotta oak, caramel malt, vanilla, light citrus hops, little chocolate, some cherries and other dark fruits in the background. Flavor is dominated by the oak, and I like it. Caramel malts, some pine and citrus hops, and vanilla round out the flavor. Can detect a touch of alcohol. Medium body, low to medium carbonation. Very nice. hawthorne00 (154), Australia
| 3.1 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 3/5 | 6/10 | 2/5 | 13/20 | Dec 24, 2009 Nut brown with modest beige head. Citrus, grass hops, and malt whisky aroma - peat, vanilla, oak and some cave smells. Very grapefruity at first. There’s nice caramel and bread too, but that’s pushed aside by the oak. Finish has fruit, bitterness and some acrid notes. A bit less oak and a bit more alcohol and this would have worked well. Further aging might help the oak integrate but will probably dull the hop aroma.
