Despite the name, scottish ale seems like a bit of a stretch. It seems to be closer to another amber ale. The caramel malt is joined by some light hops. It’s certainly quaffable, but also unremarkable. jabrewing (11), Denver, Colorado, USA

Could use a tad more finishing hops. Drinks well in the summer or winter. VitaminR (440), Colorado, USA
| 3 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 3/5 | 5/10 | 3/5 | 13/20 | Mar 14, 2008 Caramel and burned toast on the nose. Deep amber color. Sweet, with a not terribly pleasant smokiness, and not a lot of balance. Body is decent, finish is abrupt. There are better Scotch Ales out there. | 3.1 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 4/5 | 6/10 | 4/5 | 11/20 | Mar 5, 2008 Bottled. Pours clear brown with orange highlights. Small off-white head with nice lacing. Very light aroma with a little sweet caramel. Light flavour with notes of floral hops and stronger malt. Good but not remarkable. Kands (20), USA
| 3 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 5/10 | 3/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 12/20 | Mar 4, 2008 The bottle carrier stated that the idea is a lighter version of traditional Scotch Ale, so that may have biased our impression which was an overall sense of, "it’s OK." Aroma seemed a bit weak to us. The flavor was not really what we were expecting (a "lighter" Scotch Ale) -- it was an OK, if somewhat heavy, Amber Ale; not overly bitter, but still with some bite, and somewhat sweet with a noticeable sense of peat. Overall pretty good -- but not one that we’d rush out to buy again. GlenVargas (120), El Paso, Texas, USA

The aroma was a little floral, a little syrupy, a little nutty. The taste wasn’t too hoppy, but it had sufficient bite. The malty flavors hit me more than anything else, but something vaguely reminded me of a barley wine ale. The 90 Shilling isn’t exactly mind-blowing, but it’s on par with other Odell beers. swoopjones (1917), Buffalo, New York, USA

| 2.7 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 5/10 | 4/5 | 5/10 | 3/5 | 10/20 | Feb 16, 2008 Bottled, BB 11/7/07. Poured clear, medium coppery-amber with a fluffy cap of beige head. The aroma picked up very sweet, very toasted caramel, buttered bread, and ample smokage.. the prevalence of the sweetness put me off a bit. The flavor was about as expected, with toasty caramel and a touch of darker fruit at the core.. some light smoke, but mostly sticky sweets.. just not very good. About medium-bodied and tacky at times on the palate with higher carbonation.. just didn’t do it for me.
