Commercial Description:
Richer than most amber ales, 90 Shilling is smooth & deeply satisfying, with a crisp, clean Colorado taste. The name comes from the old Scottish method of naming a brewery's beer, based on original gravity and resulting tax rating.

Scottlish LIGHT ale? There’s little resemblance to most other Scottish ales. Pour is dark amber with light tan head. Nose is somewhat weak with a faint caramel and light fruits. Thin body on the palate, toasty caramel, and a rather clean finish. This beer is light and caramel sweet, easy drinking/ refreshing.

12oz bottle Aroma of grains and spices. White wispy head with some moderate lacing. Grainy spicey bitter flavored beer rater bland to me.

Tap. Aroma of light grain for the malt and herbs for the hops, with pepper, vinegar and spice in the background. Head is large, rocky, white with excellent lacing and is fully lasting. Color is clear copper. Flavor is lightly sweet, moderately acidic and acetic to start, then finishes lightly acidic and bitter. Palate is medium, watery yet a little creamy, has a soft carbonation and finishes dry. An easy drinking Scottish Ale with some good overall aspects.

A bit darker than most ambers. A somewhat fruity smell with a taste that is the same.

Crushed with Jakebra. Not much nose to speak of. Just a smooth, nice, completely unremarkable Scottish ale.

12oz bottle: Pours a mostly clear copper with a small tan head that lingers. The aroma is chocolate. The flavor is dark fruit with raisins and figs. The palate is medium and almost soapy. While I’m not a Scottish Ale fan, I’ve had a number that are better.

Lots of chocolate in this one, especially for an amber. Sort of an Irish Stout meets and Irish Red IMO. Balanced and tasty for a change pace, but certainly nothing to go out of your way for. Sam Adams Irish Red tastes better, is easier to find, and costs less. Need I say more?
