Commercial Description:
Richer than most amber ales, 90 Shilling is smooth & deeply satisfying, with a crisp, clean Colorado taste. The name comes from the old Scottish method of naming a brewery's beer, based on original gravity and resulting tax rating.

Very, very dark in appearance. Extremely drinkable, yet very filling. Very thick off-white head. Smells slightly of caramel. Kind of a dry finish on the palate.

(Bottle 35,5 cl) Clear deep amber golden with a dense off-white head. Somewhat dusty aroma also with some lightly burned caramel. Medium body with a little burned malt and hard roasted malts. The finish is dry. 180908

Darker amber pour with nice off-white head. I noticed a good big of hops at first with some sweet malt and a touch of roast. Flavor had some caramel hints with a good bit of hop bite to it. Nice carbination also.

this beer is refreshing. i needed a refreshing beer after my travels from texas to colorado. we arrived at our dear friends house to find cold o’dells in the fridge. i did not tarry to crack open a bottle of 90 Shilling - finding it far more complex, enjoyable and relaxing than i ever remembered. slightly bitter hop notes lay atop a caramelly sweet bed of roasted malts. strong thick khaki-colored head, counted down my much needed sips on the edges of the glass. reddish hue, brick like bent of light, architecturally solid column of pure all-out-ale, little carbonation, few bubbles in the foundation, hidden aroma, quasi-polar hop and malt flavors subtly revealed by consecutive sips and chews. i wanted this beer with a fine homemade pizza or grilled reuben club. this beer may have not been designed to stand alone. still, after the two days i just weathered, i liked it. and i poured a second very quickly.

Bottle from D&J Liquor in St. Louis, MO. Date seems to be 100308. Pours a dark coppery amber with a frothy off-white head. Smells malty/treacly. Medium body with frothy carbonation, but it somehow seems thinnish. Flavor is treacly and fairly roasted caramel. It’s sweet, though not sticky sweet. Finish is hardly bitter, but this one works. It has a lot of flavor. It’s really very drinkable. Something in it makes up for the lack of bitter - and strangely enough something like bitter developed on the edges of my tongue after awhile. Interesting stuff.

Tap at Brown Dog’s. A thick aroma of molasses and tar. Flavor like a porter mixed with an American Strong. A reasonably dark beer with fairly sweet tendencies, but unlike most Scotch ales.
