BlackDonald (1040), North Carolina, USA Jul 29, 2008 Cask @ the brewery - Dark brownish black with some burgundy highlights and a small but ample light brown head. Roasted coffee and chocolate nose. This is just like drinking a coffee with almost no beer qualities whatsoever. Beaver (471), Fort Collins, Colorado, USA Jul 4, 2008 Cask at the brewery. Pours a dark brown black with a bubbly light tan head that retains throughout and laces the glass.
The aroma is a bit subdued - grains, a lot of coffee, chocolate and a little anise.
The flavor is coffee, black licorice, sweet grainy chocolate malts and a little dark fruit with good bitterness at the finish. Th mouthfeel is medium bodied with low carbonation and slightly watery (to be expected from cask).
Overall, a very fine coffee stout with lots of coffee and very well balanced and good tasting.
