| 3.2 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 3/5 | 6/10 | 3/5 | 14/20 | Oct 23, 2005 Cloudy reddish-amber colour. Very yeasty aroma meshing with dark fruits. Big malty notes, at times seemingly oxidized but at other times very fresh. Hints of toffee, but mainly toasty with little hop character at all. bu11zeye (5564), Frisco, Texas, USA

| 3.1 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 3/5 | 6/10 | 3/5 | 13/20 | Oct 12, 2003 Updated: Oct 25, 2003Pale copper, low carbonation, small short-lasting head. SYrupy aroma, a little medicinal, candyish. It's hard to believe a beer with 7,9% ABV can taste so alcoholic (rhum), even for a barley wine. Blind I'd never estimate this under 10%. Very sweet taste, lots of malt left, but also nice fruity counterparts t balance it up a bit, especially blackberries and cherries. MartinT (5068), Montreal, Quebec, Canada
| 3.5 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 3/5 | 7/10 | 4/5 | 14/20 | Oct 12, 2003 Parasitical alcohol, insolent helmsman of this brew, drives the plentiful figs and raisins away...Humbling port wine parables sometimes suggest a cough-syrup-like sweetness...Luckily, almond skins and black grapes often cross the Great Wall of Alcohol and flavor segregation is overthrown...As my pal Rastacouere cleverly remarks, this is very much like an immature Kasteel Donker...This one though is not even 8%!!...Truly baffling... | 3 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 3/5 | 6/10 | 3/5 | 12/20 | Dec 29, 2008 2006 bottle. Pours amber with a thin white head. Smells of caramel, molasses, some dark fruit. Tastes caramelly and sweet with a syruppy finis. JoeMcPhee (5010), Jackson Heights, New York, USA
| 3.1 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 3/5 | 6/10 | 3/5 | 12/20 | Oct 26, 2005 BB March 20, 2006. Thick amber/brown beer with a fast fading white head. Very malty and slightly plummy aroma. Sweet caramel, brown sugar, malty body. Flavour is a bit earthy but comes across a bit confused. Fuggles, dusty, slightly cardboardy. Flavour is not as sweet as the aroma would suggest. Still full-bodied. Spicy, peppery finish. Improves as it warms, but never really comes together. ¾ (4999), Colorado, USA
| 2.9 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 3/5 | 6/10 | 2/5 | 12/20 | Aug 17, 2003 Bright clear ruby red appearance. Slightly sour aroma and flavor of scotch. A little too weak, slightly syrupy but without a big cody. Too sweet. Ernest (4495), Boulder, Colorado, USA
| 2.4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 4/10 | 3/5 | 5/10 | 3/5 | 9/20 | Feb 7, 2003 Updated: Mar 19, 2003Head is initially small, fizzy, off-white, fully diminishing. Body is
dark amber. Aroma is lightly malty (caramel), lightly hoppy (grapefruit,
resin), with notes of diacetyl and alcohol. Flavor is heavily sweet,
moderately acidic, lightly bitter. Finish is moderately sweet,
moderately acidic, moderately bitter. Medium body, syrupy texture,
lively carbonation. Second try, this time from bottle...a bit better,
but still a substandard barleywine...light and simple aroma, too sweet
and citric for my liking.
