DruncanVeasey (2690), The Penguin’s Arms, Europe, Warwickshire, England Nov 3, 2009 Updated: Nov 4, 2009Bottle at The Penguin Beer Bobbing/13 Beers of Halloween tasting. Didn’t realise it actually commemorates a fish. SPOOKY. Deep, mucky looking beast: mahogany with red glints and a creamy tan cap. Aroma of fig, cream, toffee and warm milk. Chocolate ice cream on grapefruit, leaves, malt loaf and fig. Some dense doppelbock-like richness beneath the obvious but restrained soap of citrus. A shine of quality above the majority of stuff sampled tonight. Tasty, well-integrated porter. webbcreative (111), , Oklahoma, USA Nov 1, 2009 Poured dark brown, with dark red highlights when held up to the light, with 2 finger light tan head. Aroma is roasted malt, with a heavier chocolate smell. Taste, roasted coffee flavor, with a bit of chocolate in there, also some nuttiness.. Missing some of the sweetness I like in a porter, and is a bit bitter in the end, more like bitter chocolate then hops though. Feels like the mouthfeel is going to be medium at first, but it really ends up being more thinner than I prefer, but not by much. Pretty dang good porter though I will give it that.
Overall this is a top porter for me. Pretty similar to Boulevard’s Bully! Porter [my fav]. potbeercollege (246), Boulder, Colorado, USA Oct 11, 2009 Draught at the Attic. Dark brown with small tan. Aroma of coffee, chocolate and alcohol. Similar flavor of roasted coffee, heavy chocolate and notes of caramel. Texture is a little thin for a porter. puggy211 (576), cordova, Tennessee, USA Oct 7, 2009 Bottle; Nose of coffee and chocolate malts; transparent dark brown with a samll tan head; flavor is roasted malts and coffee, with a little bit of hops. stretchfest (45), St. Louis, Missouri, USA Sep 30, 2009 Bottle. DaSilky1 (1924), San Diego, California, USA Sep 27, 2009 Bottle at denver airport. Pours a dark glassy brown with red glimmers. Frothy, lace-inducing head. Subtle roasty nose..chocolately flavors with subtle roasty notes...a bit of a wet mouthfeel and medium bodied. Good hung-over morning brew. kiefdog (1534), Tampa, Florida, USA Sep 22, 2009 12oz bottle courtesy of screach. Pours a muddy coffee black color with thin white head. Aroma is sweet and malty with notes of chocolate, caramel, light toffee, some hints of ripe dark fruit, light coffee notes. Flavor is sweet and roasty with notes of chocolate, earthy esters, ripe dark fruit, toffee, caramel, some hints of spice. Generally medium body with pleasing roasted chocolate malt finish. CitizenZ (18), Kansas, USA Sep 21, 2009 Dark brown pour, small tan head, some lacing. A sharpish odor, like burned sugar. Terrific flavor, much less like a stout than a very strong ale, with dominant coffee, roasted barley and malt, decent hops that all come together very well. Not overpowering, but not a session beer either. I really like this one.
