12 oz poured into shaker glass. Pours a dark cola color with small, light-brown head that fades in minutes. Smells like sweet chocolate, but not overpowering or overly sweet in aroma. The taste is very interesting, with a strong beginning, smooth chocolate and coffee mid-taste, with a sharp hoppy end and bitter aftertaste that stays soured in the mouth for quite some time. This was my first porter, so either I’m not meant to like porter beers, or Odell let me down for the first time.

I picked this bottle up when I was out in Denver for the 2005 GABF.

The beer poured a roasty coal black body and a tall khaki head. The aroma boasts sweet black coffee, the bitter sweetness of bakers chocolate. Pulling out a dry bittering hint of English hops there in the finish; I’m guessing Fuggles, Willamette, and maybe some Northern Brewer hops? The beer has some depth and nice character to it; dances around the palate like the old ragtime Charleston. A well rounded porter with a noticeable English flair. Well Done!

Bottle poured a clear dark reddish brown with a small brown head. Aromas of roasted malt and coffee. Palate was medium bodied and dry. Flavors of coffee, roasted malt and bakers chocolate with a smooth, dry, lingering bittersweet finish.

12 oz bottle, via beerhandy. Pours a dark mahogany with an excessive head that required 2 pours. Chocolate and coffee nose with notes of roast and licorice. Lightly roasty flavor with a weak coffee and licorice finish. Lighter bodied and pretty thin with very fine and soft carbonation despite the huge head I got. Nice overall silky mouthfeel. Overall, kind of thin and not very bold, but the texture and mouthfeel make this a very enjoyable session option. My overall score is higher than average based on what the dissected components might indicate, but the sum of this beer really is greater than its parts. Very enjoyable.

Dark malts dominate the aroma in a cocoa fashion, though the strong hop backings procure heavy citrus notes. Deep brown pulling on burgundy. Lasting nitro-like 1cm tan cover. Smooth mouthfeel, light-medium thickness with soft, almost tame carbonation. Sweet (approching vanilla) roasty(approching ashes) and hoppy. Finishing short and mostly with overlapping citric and considerable roastiness that miraculously avoid astringency. Left me quite indifferent when I was craving for a good one at the time, possibly due to the deterministic hop nature that would work better for me in a crisp beer rather than a closing on creamy one.

12z bottle. Nearly opaque with a deep, dark brown hue. Fair amount of tan spotty head with a nice ring around the glass. Coffee and bitter pine in the nose. Medium bodied and smooth. Sweet flavor and little hop bitterness. Syrupy sweet with tingling hop finish. Dry with a lingering finish. Dried fruits and citrus, pine and toffee. Great lacing on the glass. The body gets heavier, but still sweet and velvet textured.

The bottle poured a very dark garnet colored beverage with a small frothy tan head that was mostly diminishing. It did, however leave good lacing on the glass. The aroma was very nice. It presented dried sweet dates and coffee with notes of plum in the background. The body was medium-full with lively carbonation and a somewhat dry texture. The flavor started off slightly sweet with a sour edge in the background. As it matured on the palate it took on a bit more bitterness. The finish was lasting.
